More specifically, the lock nut holding my outside dog came loose...

Whats the thread pitch/diameter on that thing, so I can hopefully find a replacement?

At least, have the size to see if the Stihl dealer can scrounge one up... I'm not sure if Home Depot would have such a nut...

Also, are the clutch covers on the 361 and 441 the same? I thought someone said they were at some point...

Bolts should be 5mm and probably 1mm pitch. About 12mm long should do it.

Yes the 361 and 441 use the same clutch cover.

The 361 and 441 use the same covers. Early 361 covers did not have the recesses for the 441 studs.

The nut is special 5mm deformed locking nut - don't use nyloc.. and no, HD doesn't carry them... Your Stihl dealer should though as they are used in several parts of many saws. About 60 cents each.

If it came off, there is a good chance the wrong nut was used anyhow..

Been there...

Done that...

I had to order them from the Stihl Dealer. Wasn't able to find just the "right" bolt from another source.

10/4 Ill get my dealer to order some nuts.

And I could have him order some 441 dogs that will be a straight up a fit?

i had to locktite mine . bought a few from my local dealer to have in case they ever happen to fall off again.

Why? Just curious.

They get loose.. and even if a little loose, the dog gets loose, the bolt holes slog out, and...

The deformed nut is a standard item ( not a Stihl "special") - just not commonly available... It is the best part for the problem.

The outside dogs on my 650 and 660 seem to stay loose,I can retighten them, and by the end of the day, they'll be loose again.

Just a general maint. item.....

Use the blue loc tite thread locker..... some of mine loosen up some I never have to mess with,,,,,,

The ones that keep tryin' to fall off my 660 are the ones that came on the saw...I guess those damm stihl's just can't hold up....Never had a dawg fall off of a husky.

Yep.. the forest must be littered with Stihl dogs:laugh:

The best solution is to replace the nut AND bolt if you are having problems. If the dog has been loose it will damage the thread making it hard for the locknut to get a grip. Yes, blue loctite could help, but a bolt is real cheap.

Silly Q here Andy, what part of the nut is deformed? Slight taper on the thread or slight change of pitch near the outside? Ovate? Just curious is all as I was thinking if its in the thread part then you'd have to make sure it went on the right way so as not to change the thread of the stud closest to the body and thereby defeating its purpose? I could see them working loose if that was the case. Dunno, askin' :)
