They have an unreliable setup in there for choke. part choke, run and stop. If that plastic bellcrank piece get worn, or the detent spring gets bent things don't work as intended.

I have a used one now that has that conditions. I need to get some new parts.

Thepeople that like Stihls, just overlook it and go on.

grounding problem

I had the same thing on mine , there is a wire on the left side under the air cleaner cover connected to a small bolt. That wire is broke or the bolt is not grounding it out properly, they strip out easily, I replaced the wire and added a new bolt and that fixed it ..........:)

Sometimes that spring contact get so out of place that things cannot work properly. That is besides the already mentioned tendency for the screw to come loose.

Part of the problem is from not knowing to engage the throttle trigger prior to trying to put it on choke. If you did not get it new and have not read the manual, you would not know how it was designed to "not work". Just another one of the finer features of working on Stihls that the techs just get used to.

I'd better be careful or I'll get the Stihl / Husky fued fired back up again.

Go ahead Tony, stir the fire and make Fish proud of you. I just love to read all the posts about Stihl vs Husky. I think Stihl is winning since Otto has been so quiet lately. I got some of each but my Sachs/Dolmars are my favorites!;)

Real easy to repair. Check the continuity of the 2 wires to the switch. Repair the one with the open circuit. Saw will now shut off.

I know all the guys think this switch is bad, but it has been very reliable and I have not replaced very many master control levers. The wire is usually broken by a bad buffer at the top of the saw.

Actually Otto is in some hick jail for some petty crimes.
Something involving federal firearm regulations, and some
misunderstanding involving hydroponic agriculture. He will be back in a few years.

I still say you don't have to work on the on- off-choke mechanisms on hardly any saws but Stihls. They have the poorist set up in that regard that is out there.

PS. I just today worked on another 017 with that mechanism malfunctioning.

I agree with tony, I like the Stihl starting system better than any other saw, to me it has been dependable and if you ever need to work on it they are very simple. I have owned many other saw brands and one in particular has a system just like a poulan, talk about unreliable, especialy when the choke knob is a flimsy piece of plastic and either pulls out or breaks off.
