Unlike some I will make this clean and as nice as I can...
I joined this site to try and learn more about tree climbing and care but have found most here do not practice this themselves. While some here are working as they should, too many are not so here is where proper tree care is today:

1. TOPPING IS BAD. I think most people here agree with this but it should be said. Topping will create a bad structure, can kill the tree, and looks like poop. Don't do it, there should be fines for people that do.

2. PRUNING IN SPIKES IS BAD. There I said it once and for all. The ISA, ANSI, and every research facility I know of have proven that spike wounds allow bad things to enter trees. Have spikes ever killed a tree, I don't know, but I do know any bug or disease entering a tree will hurt overall asthetics. Lets not forget that spike marks don't look too good either; we should be leaving things so the only change is what ment to cut out.

3. Always use at least double locking biners (I always use tri-locks). This is just common sense, I have even seen a tri-lock open up in a tree once (made my buddy a little nervous). I don't like the Kong's too much because there aluminum ones have cast gates that tend to break over time but the petzl ones are good.

4. LEARN NEW CLIMBING KNOTS AND FRICTION HITCHES. I am especialy talking to those still using a tautline from the tail of their rope. The tautline is old, out-dated, and shouldn't be used due to such better options. Not only do you now have the Blakes (tied with a split tail please) but things like the VT hitch. I personaly like the schwaebisch using 8 or 10 mm Ultratech. In the end a better knot will make you more productive and keep you safe.

5. STAY TIED IN AT ALL TIMES. I don't mean with a lanyard but with your climbing line. This is not hard stuff to think about, if you need to get down fast and you only have a lanyard holding you in then what? I know when we recrotch there will be a time with only a lanyard but other then that there is no excuse. This is safety and we should be practicing it as much as possible.

6. BE A LITTLE NICER TO NEW GUYS. I know they don't know much but they are here to learn so try to teach instead of tick off. While they questions may seem dumb to you now there was a time you didn't know the answer, at least they are asking instead of assuming. Just remember that we all started at the bottom.

Good bye to all and climb/work safe, you don't want to be a statistic.

I agree with what you are saying.
Why leave? Most here would agree with your points, and it's a chance to teach the rest good tree care and ethics.

I am finding few here really do care about new ideas but are stuck in there ways and think because of years of experience they must be right. I may be new to climbing but can bring a lot to the table, being the type that likes to learn as much as possible.

P.S. Darn it, no more 69 hehe (I also had to comment on a post from the chainsaw forum just to save face)

I haven't went back through your posts, but maybe it's the way you say it? I dunno. But, you will find that there are many here who do truly care about the trees they care for, and are open to new ideas. sometimes a little sugar kills the bitter taste. A long search of my posts will show you I had to learn that same lesson.

I do know one guy, older, climbs on snap and tautline, has for years, safe worker. I tried to show him the splittail, and blakes as a good next step. He liked it, but hey, he's older, not too long till retirement, he's had no problem before, why change it now. I'd have to agree with him.

I say belly up to the table, dinners on it's way out.
Stick around.

Now hey there, don't let that oil thing get your goat.Nobody agrees on that issue, never have, never will .Every time it comes up,on the forum, somebody gets upset about it.I say,it's your saw,mix it the way you want to,the heck with the rest of them . :)

Please do stick around, there have been times I have felt like dropping out for good, for whatever reason I stick around I have no idea, there is not another site that offers the mix of information this one has to offer.

The site has gone through a change these last few months, but I think it is safe to say it is coming back, slow yes, but still coming back. I could see it when General Maas rallied the troops to arms.

Who knows maybe the best is yet to come.

Some good people are dropping like flies, and other irritating ones are are still buzzing around like gnats.

There are issues here which are undermining the stability of this site.
1: Some people are quick to go off on newbies.
2: Others simply look for any excuse, real or imaginary, to put someone down.
3: Several interesting people have left due to the edit issue, which was resolved, but these people should be invited back because of their contributions.
4: There are many here who are upset about the re-publishing of intellectual property.

Maybe some are too close to actually see what is happening here, but form my prospective there appears to be a storm brewing in arborland.

eh? whats this all about - i hwave not been aware of this- or just didn't bother to read it

Hang tough, & keep on

preaching good tree care, even if sometimes you think that you're preaching to a deaf choir.

The makeup of AS shifts, sometimes subtley, sometimes dramatically. Speak your mind, & be ready to defend your position. You never know who might learn something from you, or vise versa.

Are "they" in cahoots with "some" and "most" ? Sounds like a lot of guys not doing things right in your eyes, stick around, fire back. :umpkin:

VT please stick around. Totally agree with what you said about cutting new guys some slack. I top, freeclimb, use a tautline always, wear spikes, use a double-locking snap.....so what, don't let hacks like me get you down. Everyone is welcome here.

If you go to the chainsaw section and look at "the great oil question" thread you will see what I am talkin about. Yeah I made some mistakes, I am human and with little time durring the day to make posts. No matter what there is no reason for the name calling and general a$$ hole attitude. I remember an arboristsite that was fun and friendly, oh well.

last post?

VTMech, as an engineer you were trained in logic and that will make it harder to get your point across to those that don't think in a logical manner. There are more engineers here than you might imagine. The oil debate will go on for ever. Not once did I see anyone mention Jean-Joseph Lenoir's two stroke engine or Dougald Clerk or Joseph Day's improvements to the two cycle air cooled. If they looked around they might even find an old oil engine made by George Brayton and then the debate on why we don't have deisel two stroke saws could begin. Logic is lost on some members, they believe what they believe and you're not going to change their minds with facts. Facts and logic run contrary to what they believe. Sit back and enjoy the fun stuff, you're not going to change their minds with facts, that would be too logical, facts might upset their world. I hate to see you go. Keep your chains sharp, the saws cut better that way.

VTMechEeng,

Take solace. Those guys giving you are giving you a such hard time are the same guys that claim that a new chainsaw will run without a diaphram (not the gravity feed chainsaws from the 1900's to the 40's, those will). If you don't believe it, research the threads. I got into an argument with them over this about a year ago and finally gave up. Though they might be able to run a percentage calculation, they still think their saws is run by the "Tooth Fairy" with fairy magic.

Well i for one hope you come back again after you've cooled down.

I've been here since nearly the first month of the sites running (Cannot remember my first screename) we've all seen this before, over and over. "and this too shall pass".

I do sometimes nee a hiatus from the site, to get away from the whiners with less of a life then I.

Once again i don't understand the brewhaha about the "crossposting", I thought it was sorta cool, and ISA did it before.
