That's great, Nick- but I paid $48 for this sling and I'm not willing to kiss it goodbye in the mail without getting some use out of it. Maybe when I start buying the stuff in bulk and have some 'extra' laying around I can do that.

I don't have anyone test my knots, so why test my splices?

Mike, if you aren't using a dynomometer in a test, what value does it have?

Like a knot, if it is done properly and dresses neat, it is a usable peice of equipment.

splices

My boss was telling me of a scarry situation. A friend of his was using the split tail system wit splices. He got about 30ft up and the splice failed him. He got the ropes spliced by a very well known compay. It could have cost him his life. How do you put your life in the hands of technology if you've already seen it fail?

How did it fail?

I inspect my splices before I climb, just as I inspect my knots regularly.

knots and splices are the same tech. Friction applications to secure a rope. they are usualy more efficient in their ussage.

I seen knots fail, it was due to not checking them prior to loading.

Splice

The guy who it failed on is an experianced climber. He checks his knots, splices, ropes, and rigging before every climb. The splice looked good. From what I under stood on his way up the splice came appart. Releasing him from his climbing line. He sent it back and the company said it was just a rare defect in the way it was spliced. So I guess you can say it all depends on who spliced it. As he did more research. It had happened to a few others. It came down to what they were using to splice the rope couldn't hold the two to one ratio the climber was putting on the rope.
