You need to look up Split fire splitters to see how they mount their wedge. It's a good thing that the 1/4" wall piece failed instead of the cylinder rod bending and snapping. You would be better off with an H beam for your wedge mount slide. I've built a few splitters and redone a bunch of them too, learn something new each time.
Here's my latest one. 4 way hydraulic adjusted wedge, 36" stroke cylinder, 13 hp motor ( likely the same one you have) . I split 32" rounds for my boiler and can put 16" rounds end to end and split 2 at a time. Prince auto cycle valve. The chute on the end is to feed splits onto a conveyor.
