My new Dolmar

Hello to all,
I joined this forum a few months ago because I was in the market for a new saw. I was all set to replace my 20 year old Stihl 011 with either a Stihl 270 or Husky 353. I never new anything about Dolmar. The more I read the messages here the more I learned how popular Dolmar was.

My wife knew I wanted a new saw and I think after hearing me talk so much about the Dolmar she went out bought me the PS 5100S as my Christmas gift. I couldn't be more happy. I can't wait to get out into the woods to try it out.

I went to see my son yesterday and he previously asked me if he could borrow my old Stihl to cut up some wood he just picked up. He was happy when I told him that I was now passing it over to him to keep. The old saw still has some life in it until he can buy his own Dolmar.

Thank you to all who have answered my previous posts about which saw to buy. I'm sure my wife made the right choice (thanks to you guys) and I will be happy with my new saw for many years.

He gave his Stihl to his son.. Now He can tell his wife That he probably should not have given it away, But it would be to much to ask for it back..So Dad will just have to buy another dolmar.Back up saw , you know. LOL

A question for any of you that have a Dolmar. What octane gas are you using in this saw? The owners manual suggests using regular unleaded gas with a minimum octane value of 91 ROZ. I talked to the owner of the shop where my wife bought the saw and he told me he uses 87 octain in all his saws.

Dude, I'm getting myself in the habit of running 93oct. for all my saws... The Stihl dealer told me to only run 93, but this was the same idiot holding my husky WOT for like 10seconds while it was cold. Soooo... I don't put much faith. I look at it like this, octane can vary up to 3points from fresh to a few weeks old, i.e. 87 could be as high as 90 if it's fresh, which with these gas prices it is cause everyone it buying 87. The 93 could be as high as 96. For just a couple gallons of gas it's what, an extra .30 or so. Buy the good stuff and make sure it lasts. Don't use any gas over 3 or 4 months old and you'll be good to go buddy... My opinion anyhoot...

Thanks for your help. I run my Corvette on 93 octane...I might as well run this high performance toy on the same.

Whatever gas you have had good luck with go ahead and use. We use 91 it generally has the least amount of additives around here. It does vary so much from brand to brand city to city. No probs with any octane level in the 91 - 94 range usually the higher the octane the longer the storage life as well. Just keep it in a sealed container and out of the sun.

my 5100 has be a treat to use,it has about 50 tanks of use now.
it seemed to take quite awhile to break in,be using stihl rs,awesome saw.

I just rebuilt a 011AV 41cc and a poulan 38cc. The 011 was no match for the poulan in the cut in 11" poplar.
I could only imagine how you must feel pulling the trigger on that fine 5100S.

What does a Dolmar 5100 cost?

I was quoted $410 in Mass plus we have to pay the guv'ner 5%. Saw that price online too. This is for an 18"- 3/8 setup. Didn't try dickering yet, may not, I like this dealer so far.

There is no comparrison between the two saws. When I originally bought the 011 I never intended to cut as much wood as I am now. It was only for some light clean up arount the yard. I love my new toy.

What does a Dolmar 5100 cost?

My 5100 cost $409 and there was no dickering on the price with this dealer. He wouldn't even throw in an extra chain. I have the 18" bar and .325 chain. I liked the saw so much from reading all the comments here, the price didn't matter. I just new I wanted a light saw with more power that what I had.
