I started cutting the bigger antenna whackers like advised, full throttle and sharp chain. But, I now cut through any hinge because the tree is small and Twinkle cuts fast, and they launch into the road, which although fun, can make their little butts flip up too. Now, I'm curious, when you cut a big alder, do you leave a hinge? I assume you do and that it probably behaves better than this bent over stuff. Here's a couple of pictures for you stumpologists.

It was kind of a dark day so the flash was flashing.

Open that face so she don't chair, and be safe. Have fun!

Atleast it's not Cottonwood LOL :greenchainsaw:

+1- yep, open face on Alders saves some real grief later on. Stump looks good to me. Yah, the butts shoot up on occasion and that's all a part of the fun.

Oh, and nice Thermos....

Alder is about the only tree I usually put at least a 45 degree face in... The only thing I hate worse about Alder besides fallin' the dang things... is all the orange crap that gets on you, your saw, your riggin'... you gets the idear.

Hey Jacob... it's nighty nite time... you're burnin' the midnite oil like me. However... Imma off to hit the rack. :D

Thank you. I have a purple one too. The pink one I bought at the after the flood sale in Chehalis. It was priced very low. It had a little bit of mud on the outside. Not to worry, I washed it a few times using bleach before using it.

Ill leave a Hinge on Alder 99% of the time (I fall timber on Vancouver Island we have big leaning Alders) And usually Ill Plunge Cut on both side of the Back cut First to Releave Preassure(Alders always Chair , so Plunging and Bore cutting is pretty common) Then Ill proceed with the back cut .... Undercut 1/3 Of tree and Like Gary said You can get away with a Steeper undercut to with alders.

Just my .02

Try a Siswell cut in big Alder sometime, I never have, be curious to see if it works. It releases the pressure infront of the hinge, allowing the tree to move or swing (if cut to do so) more freely, relieving the "vice". It works slick on big leaning or swing canidates, fir, pine, ect.
