A while back I posted about the son's used Husky 254XP refusing to fire.
The main idea from here was scoring, which I have now confirmed.
Is it likely I can get by with a new piston, or must I get the cylinder too?
The piston really isn't scored all that bad, but the comp is only 75 PSI.
Is it likely that cleaning/honing would be OK?
I bought this thing running for $150 and this occurred within just a few hours use, but I don't thik the seller knew of any problem.
The son knows how to saw, but maybe overheated it somehow???

Most importantly, does anyone have a good deal on a piston, or P&C?
Ring too, of course. I'd use super good used parts if someone could vouch for them. He will cut a couple cords of firewood yearly, most under 12".

And if you don't mind repeating, what's the site for Husky service manuals?
I bought a Stihl CD from eBay and it's great.

I usually do well with used stuff, but I'm caught on this one!
Starting at $150, a shop repair would get me to the price of a small Stihl, or something bigger used.

Thanks,
Wilson

There's a ton of Husky guys on this site and surely one of them can fix you right up. Come on fellers help that man out with that saw.

I saw an 026 pro today at a pawn shop for 200

I told him it was to much. Looked to be a decent saw./ I almost offered him buckfifty. but I would rather put that money towards a PS5100S

If the jug doesn't look bad at this stage, chances are it will clean up for you. Post some pics if you can. The price of a new piston/rings is what your risk is, if it doesn't work out...........well plus your time........ worth a shot if the jug isn't obviously scored. That said, you should try and figure out what caused the problem to begin with, so you are not repeating it after the rebuild.

Infomet, I have attached a copy of the service manual for the 254XP. If you can give me the year of the saw or the serial # I will also post the IPL. Unfortunately I can't help you with used parts, but if the cylinder can be cleaned up and honed it is definitely worth installing a new piston and ring.

Thanks HK!
I'll get some numbers.

Hey Husky Guys, anyone have piston or P&C for this thing??

Husky Update

Well, the scoring idea was right. Not much could be seen through the ex port, but some, so I opened her up. My camera isn't much for closeups, but you can get the idea. The marks above the ring groove are pretty deep, so I first thought of FOD, but nothing was in the cyl or case. Interestingly, the metal above the groove was pushed down, locking the ring firmly in the groove.

I put in a new GB piston from Stang. It was nearly impossible to pull over at first...maybe I put too much oil in the cyl, but after 3-4 pulls it looseden up and I turned on the switch and choked it. It fired in about two more and started after about 3-4 more...much quicker than I expected.

There was almost no Al on the cyl wall, just one small area, which I hit with 600 enery, lightly. The rest was smooth as a baby's butt. I didn't want to chance honing and it was late, so I'm gonna give her a try after some idling to break things in. Fingers crossed.

I agree with recent posts abouot parts cost...absurd. All the more important to be careful and to hold on to our salvage saws.

Speaking of which, I'm now gonna see what's wrong with the brake on the 254...feels like a broken band, so I'll be looking for parts for that.

Thanks for all the good posts!

if its just broken brake band then one from 257/262xp should fit it...
