I trimmed a unique tree today nobody had any idea where it came from. HO just moved in with it already installed.

Anybody want to take a shot at what species this tree is?

It had a smooth, gray bark and brittle punky wood. It's only grown 20' x 20'. It's leaves were all fallen off, but there were still many flower pods on the tree. The HO described the pods as having flowered.

catulpa!

The flower pods were dime sized, spherical and with points. They were all split open and flowers long gone. Nope, no long pods. I know what you mean.

Paulownia!

...because it's hard to imagine not mentioning the long pods on a catalpa. And fortheaction should know to take a photo of a flower pod instead of three of a leaf!

Those paulownia trees pretty abundant in pangaea? A shot of the tree itself would of made it a easy id even without the leaves, still say its a redbud.

I looked them up. Definitely not a redbud. Its a lot bigger than redbud, and the bark is smooth unlike redbud. Paulownia looks almost just right, but its bark is not smooth.

I looked up cercis, but no results.

Another thing about our tree is that it as dark purply limb ends. Otherwise the bark is gray.

The leaves are too big for redbud.

I'll also say paulownia.[/QUOTE

I had no clue what the paulownia tree was till this thread, we call those weeds empress trees out here. Haven't meet anyone who delt with trees for long who couldn't id one, but after all it is FTA

Well hell. Thanks for your positive words. It's not an empress weed.

Missed the post about the leaf size, seems like a empress. Next time post a pic of the tree and the bark as well, even so one of your better threads.

Heres the question what size ladder were you on when trimming?

I can't find anything on that on. What does it mean?

lol I meant buds, wonder what I was thinkin, anyway it means if there is a leaf on onside there is one on the opposite side of it. There are only seven trees that have opposite buds and paulonia is one of the seven, therefore if the leaves are alternate it can't be a paulonia.
