lol I meant buds, wonder what I was thinkin, anyway it means if there is a leaf on onside there is one on the opposite side of it. There are only seven trees that have opposite buds and paulonia is one of the seven, therefore if the leaves are alternate it can't be a paulonia.

I see. I see. There's a good fact burnt to mind. Preciate it. :msp_thumbup:

Heres the question what size ladder were you on when trimming?

Ol' gun slinger, I'm slick in trees. You'd love it if I came out there and helped you get that stuff done with you. I get it 'er done right.....attention to detail.....as brave as a Stihl.....communicate.....remember gobs of details.....never tire.....faster than anyone you ever hired.......... StihlO, that's why I own it and train them instead of keep getting trained by the owner. I wouldn't say I'm a 5 tool player if I wasn't.

Now then, what kind of ladder do you suggest that I climb?

Hey Keith,

It looks like Paulownia to me but yes, lets see if he says its opposite before we all jump to conclusion......waiting for the answer Mr. FTA......with suspense....is it ....... opposite? or Alternate?

If you still don't know how to tell, grab a copy of Dirr and start reading.

I found the Dirr book, and it's only $14 to order the itunes software. That software has interactive search system in it based on what I can tell. I'll get it.

Here is the pic that the HO sent me of the tree. This is before I worked on it.

*I'll put it in the next post.

looks opposite to me and it dosn't look like a maple, ash, dogwood, buckeye, horse chestnut, leaving the Paulownia 99.9%

How long are you going to keep this up, FTA?
I could ID it for you, but then you come back like an ass.
How can you really say you are providing a service if you cannot ID a tree you are paid to do?
BTW, I bet you you whacked it to look like the tree in the background of your pick. And I bet I would be right.
You wanna know what it is? I ain't telling ya!
Jeff
Merry Christmas, btw.

Oh how dire. How dire indeed, Jeff. :)

Hairy Christmas, BTW.

MillB, I'm nearly sure now it's a Paulownia too. I went back through the web phots for that species, and although none of the pics are in the autumn stage like ours here, the stems look identical. The flowers on our tree are gone, but the remaining pods are arranged like the Paulownia flowers. I saw some smooth, gray bark like our tree here. I'm 99.9% sure it's Paulownia.

I think I'll buy that Dirt software online now. I'd like to get something on my phone to ID in the field.

Jeff, you got an ID app on your phone?

Dude, FTA......there's no app that will substitute the education you should be seeking......... With all do respect, stop trying to make tree care something you take your smartphone out for. There are way too many respectable, educated arborists that have spent time and money learning arboriculture correctly, and provide a service based that solid background.

Grab the copy of Dirr, Woody Plants. Then get yourself a Peterson's field guide (for the West Coast, I would imagine :) ) It might also behoove you to grab a few other books listed on the ISA's website. They will help you greatly.

Sometimes arborists get stumped on something they haven't seen in a while, or something exotic, or even something stupid, as an ID. But walking back to the truck with a twig in hand that you have CUT off with a nice little pair of felco's to look at a book is WAY more professional than taking out the smartphone and saying to the client, " Well, my IPHONE Says....."

LOL, some of you guys.... :)

I'll probably be forced to get the Dirr. Which is fine with me. There was a guy on here who kept suggesting a book called "Western........." they sell it at home depot, and it's basically a comprehensive landscaping book with a whole strew of trees described too. Problem is not all of them are drawn, and none of them are photographed. How am I supposed ID with that? That one was a waste of hard earned money. This Dirr book is more like it though.
