I have a red oak probably 40" or so. 75'. Can't get the bucket to it. Big crack running about 40' up. I've done dozens of these trees before and am confident I will reach the ground the way I left it. Just can't quit thinking about it. My stomach has been in knots all night. Good thing-no clean up. Just looking for a little moral support!?!

Is the crack in the main trunk or is it a two stem tree? Make sure your saw is sharp and bigger is better if your droppin big stuff.

Single stem. I have a brand new 404 for the 880. Just hope no critters are hiding. That seems to be happening to me too much lately

Depending on how bad the split is and if it is codom or not, I may put a strap or three around at various heights to make sure it does not split while you are in it. Other than that, take your time and be extra careful. You never know how the crack has messed with the strength of the spar and when cuttin notches it is really easy to cut too far. Just be carfeul and really take it slow.

Def going to bring all the rigging gear tomorrow. Single stem. Only thing that really concerns me is that the monster elm 100' behind it uprooted 3 years ago. I know the wind has been working on her for some time now.

yeah it sucks having to evict the locals in the tree. As was mentioned a strap or two should make things safer if anything else give you some peace of mind. Look, listen and feel for anything out of the ordinary and take your time.

Ratchet strap at thesplit with some bull line tying major unions together and if you can work it top down so you don't mess with the weight distribution .... thats worked for me. And my prayer and appreciation to the tree and up you go.

Maybe it'll just disappear before I get there in the morning. That would be sweet.

dude just relax and don't sweat it :msp_thumbup:

olddirty had some good advise there

Use multiple redirects with your rigging blocks if you can it will decrease the loads your putting on the tree. Take em small if you have too just be safe. You got it!

Thanks man. I'll probably be be able to get a full 8 hours sleep now! I knew I should of put more money on this job:laugh:

Definately ratchet strap it like some of these other guys have mentioned. Is there another tree nearby that you can tie in to?

Did a nasty poplar late fall that had a bad lean to it in soft ground. It had started to pull out of the ground a little. I tied into the other poplar right behind it as a precaution and everything went really well.

Just remember, as soon as you start dropping weight out of the tree, you are USUALLY taking some of the pressure off of it that may cause it to fail.

If this tree has you stressing that much, maybe you should just walk away from it? Especially if there isn't enough money on it. What's it really worth to you?

How long have you been climbing?

+1, good point Mike

moral support

do what these guys are telling you... use a strap...crank it down hard... take small pieces etc.

on the mental side. STOP WORRYING ABOUT.... it does not help....your mind will make the tree bigger and way worse then it is in reality..... cross your bridges when you get to them..... just be prepared and play it smart.....usually you are worrying about nothing and wasting your time... and you might be a little better then you think... these kinds of trees give you a notch on your belt and click up in experience. i have attacked lots trees i wasnt sure i could do... and in the end it made me better... in time you'll walk right through that fear. you'll feel as natural in any tree as you are standing on the ground... hope this helps
