I have a set of Klein climbers with the stock L-pads. Needless to say, my shins are raw after climbing. What do y'all all use as far as leg pads? I had my eye on those cast aluminum jobs but was wondering how well they conform to the calf being that they are rigid. I think I have weird calves or something because my Klein upper straps barely make it around. What about the Gecko pads? Hopefully something that Sherrill sells. Thanks.

if i were you.............

i would look at the velcro wraps WITH steel inserts.trust me on the steel inserts.if you don't,you'll wish you had.

or the aluminum Caddy pads.

Plasmech,

I don't get on here much anymore, but I recall that I ragged on you when you first came on the board looking to clear branches from sattelite dishes. At least I think that was you..

Glad to see you've taken this seriously.

The forestry school I attended years ago had a set of spurs with the cheapo L-pads for everybody to practice on. Those things almost made me question if I wanted to get into removals at all.

I have the aluminium pads on Buckinghams. They didn't pick up the nickname "Caddy pads" for nothing, I've never had a chafing issue. I've worn the foam backing out twice now, just scrape the old stuff out, trim new high density foam to fit, can of spray glue, good to go.

But I have borrowed a pair of Bashlins that had the "Buck Pads", super thick multi-layered leather and foam and felt, nicely rolled over top and bottom seams, the ones with two top straps per side. The workmanship was up there with quality saddlery. I only did two trees that day, but man they were nice. But I see Sherill does not list Kliens as compatible, just Buckingham and Bashlins. Why they wouldn't fit Kliens, I dunno.

I've also worked for a couple years with a company that provided Alloy Geckos, so my heavier steel Buckinghams got an extended rest there for awhile. The full Gecko pads will work only on Geckos, though I suppose the inserts could be strapped on under almost any spurs. But the same could be said for a wad of tubesocks. :)

My observation about any velcro attachment for anything in tree work: Extra care and attention must be paid during use and storage. It is the very nature of velcro to harvest any tiny bits of fibre that comes in contact with it. Repeated cleanings quickly break down the hook-to-loop function. Not a big problem, you just can't leave them laying around "open" where there will be sawdust flying.

Yep, well actually I'm the guy who posted about the time, well over a year ago now, that I used a ladder to top a tree.

So I'm at the very end of this 20 foot extension ladder, and the ladder is tied into the tree. I cut the top of the tree without any face cut or kerf cut whatsoever. Mother####er hinges down and SLAM right into the trunk. Darn near took the ladder out from underneath me.

Needless to say, I have come a LONG way since then! Nice to hear from you man.

Oh yea and then there was the story about my uncle who kept wanting to cut branches whilst working from his deer stand. People thought it was actually me, like I was making up this uncle story or something. Nope, it was him. What a nut!

I was hella green. Still am in many ways. Just not as stupid anymore.

The pads don't bother me as much as the weird offset spikes that they have. I prefer the buckingham strait spikes with the steel shin cup pads.

If I remember correctly caddy pads didnt make a pad for Kliens, though they may now. Also there was a post not to long ago and a lot of people were saying they had to do a lot of cutting or filing to get the caddy pads to fit on their gaffs.

When you say Caddy pads are you referring to the cast aluminum pads with the foam rubber backing? They are rated for Klein's, on paper anyway.

I ordered some caddy pads for my buckinghams. Haven't had a chance to put them on yet and haven't needed to climb since getting them but they look like they're going to be great - about an inch of padding. When I asked this question a couple months ago, the caddy pads were highly recommended by members of AS.

Klein pads?

Called Aluminum Leg Pads. Get em from Baileys. Also called Caddy Pads, and for good reason. Straps not long enough? How long are yours? Also in Baileys new set of straps may be in order. 26" long by 1" wide. I thinks nylon holds up better than leather.

Plas, glad you are still around, and getting smarter. When ever you leave the ground, good idea to think think think before you make each cut. Much easier to think, when you are not in pain as something is ripping skin off your legs right?

randy

Baileys lists the Aluminum Leg Pads are now designed to fit Buckingham, Bashlin and Klein climbers.

Klein is what you wear

Keep them..you know how to use them. caddy pads from baileys work on them. I have done it and thinking about getting a set to use on my pole gaffs for work. no issue with fitment. takes a little height adjustment but the foam is awesome. worth the money..last pads you will ever buy.

Cool. And by the way Stihl-o-matic, I don't think you are a Tackleberry. Just don't execute a no-knock on my house by mistake because it could be harmful or fatal if swallowed :) :) :)

Get rid of that hydroponics grow in your basement and you should be fine. From some of Dans posts I know who has been smoking all your weed

Hahaha. OK I'll shut down down my grow lights. In all seriousness, I don't have anything that resembles illegal in this house. I'm not an FFL, but close to it, if you know what I mean. I don't mess with the law. At least not in my own crib, no way no how. So tell me some cop stories man! (seriously)

YOU ASKED FOR IT

Which ones do you want to hear

****** WARNING A LITTLE GRAPHIC ******

how about the one with the two armed robbery suspects me and my partner caught and one of them while still in the jimmy took a cheap plastic handle steak knife kind of like this

A5.1231_Steak_Knife_Pointed.jpg

He was trying to commit suicide by cop so he tried to get up to shoot him while in the back seat of the jimmy holding the knife. No threat to anyone so hes not getting shot. He gets mad and starts stabbing himself in the neck. When that doesnt work he starts cutting his own throat 3 times across the neck with a serrated steak knife. I am standing at the door watching the show (thinking holy #### thats unreal). The guy then falls out the door over the waterfall of blood now flowing over the rocker panel (mental image of which is still clear as day). He gets up on his knees and starts to Harry Carry himself with the steak knife the whole time yelling SHOOT ME. Well I was finally able to knock the knife out of his hand and subdue him. They toss his junky ass in th ambulance and he codes. They bring him back to life at the hospital spend 5 hours stitching up most his major organs to find out he was already a vegetable because he wasnt getting any oxygen to his brain.

Or how about the one where I killed some POS by kicking him 15 times in the head because he was fighting over a gun with the cop he had just ambushed and stabbed 11 times. The two of them lying in the cops blood in a third floor stairwell of a multi family dwelling with a bunch cops running up the stairs to get to us. I was the first one to him and decided it wasnt safe to shoot the POS so I booted him to the face 15 times I think it took 12 or 13 before he let go of the gun. He wasnt feeling much of course he had just stabbed his wife and 2 year old daughter too.

Sadly enough these stories go on and on for me but it gives you a little idea on what SOME cops go through. Maybe people wouldnt be so fast to judge cops if they really understood some of this ####.

Good Lord. Sounds like you live in a hot area as far as crime goes. Must be "fun".

I posted it before but we are almost always in the the 25 most dangerous cities in the country so ya its pretty bad. I could go on and on for a while with stories like that anyone of them would mentally and emotionally scare most people for life. I am not saying I am not a little f-d up from it all but for the most part I am a pretty decent person, a very good cop, a even better husband and father so I guess I am doing okay.

That crap is what drove he in to tree work. Its my escape I can go out and do a 3 or 4 day tree job bust my hump to the point where I cant stand up straight at night. But at the end of the night when I sit down at my computer I am totally relaxed and in my HAPPY PLACE

My_Happy_Place_by_mrcool256.jpg

and unlike many cops and tree workers I am NOT climbing in the bottle to get there

....back on subject

i use the padded steal velcro and its a dream. im spoiled cuz ive used those since the begining but have used the old school and i have no clue how people use thos damn things. While upstairs the only thing on your mind should be every cut, not "holy #### my shins hurt, lets cut this thing down so i can stop the pain". When you're in pain/tired or have a dull chain you start doin stoopid crap so you can just get out of the damn tree. IMO comfort is VERY important, it helps you concentrate on whats important, SAFETY
