Plasmech,
I don't get on here much anymore, but I recall that I ragged on you when you first came on the board looking to clear branches from sattelite dishes. At least I think that was you..
Glad to see you've taken this seriously.
The forestry school I attended years ago had a set of spurs with the cheapo L-pads for everybody to practice on. Those things almost made me question if I wanted to get into removals at all.
I have the aluminium pads on Buckinghams. They didn't pick up the nickname "Caddy pads" for nothing, I've never had a chafing issue. I've worn the foam backing out twice now, just scrape the old stuff out, trim new high density foam to fit, can of spray glue, good to go.
But I have borrowed a pair of Bashlins that had the "Buck Pads", super thick multi-layered leather and foam and felt, nicely rolled over top and bottom seams, the ones with
two top straps per side. The workmanship was up there with quality saddlery. I only did two trees that day, but man they were nice. But I see Sherill does not list Kliens as compatible, just Buckingham and Bashlins. Why they wouldn't fit Kliens, I dunno.
I've also worked for a couple years with a company that provided Alloy Geckos, so my heavier steel Buckinghams got an extended rest there for awhile. The full Gecko pads will work only on Geckos, though I suppose the inserts could be strapped on under almost any spurs. But the same could be said for a wad of tubesocks.
My observation about any velcro attachment for anything in tree work: Extra care and attention must be paid during use and storage. It is the very nature of velcro to harvest any tiny bits of fibre that comes in contact with it. Repeated cleanings quickly break down the hook-to-loop function. Not a big problem, you just can't leave them laying around "open" where there will be sawdust flying.
