Hello,
I recently bought a used Stihl 026 in fantastic shape and a week later the dead ironwood (MN Ironwood) in my yard the squirrels enjoy so much fell over. I started cutting it up this weekend knowing how hard on the chain and saw it would be. Sure enough half way into the job the chain stopped cutting. So now I am looking to sharpen it but the problem is I am not sure on the size of the round file that should be used how can I tell? The chain is a Stihl with .325 stamped on it. The bar appears to be an original 16". Also are there different size raker gauges and if so how can I tell which size I need?
I watch Stihl's youtube video on the process and expect I am ready for the job once I get these details ironed out. Your help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Nick

I use a 3/16 file on all of my .325 chain. I don't know what raker gauge you need but I just take a couple passes with flat file every once in awhile. Don't get carried away if you do the chain will get real grabby. You will learn what the saw likes after awhile. Some one will be along to give you the right height in a minute. Welcome to AS you will have a good time.

For .325 chain a 3/16 file is the match. Most stihl dealers carry the kits that have a round file & guide, flat file and raker gauge (I'm sure you can get similar kits elsewhere too). Get the 3/16 kit and you'll have everything you need.

What snowdingo said plus: If you are new to sharpening chains, while at the dealer as for a short section of new chain with a couple cutters. Use it to see what a proper tooth looks like, most beginners (and I was one for too many years) put way too much "hook" on the teeth.
