As I mentioned here already , the workshoppist site is down, and has been for a while now. It was really handy to find info on Stihl/Husky serial numbers.
Does anyone know where one can find info on serial numbers, e.g. to look up the (approximate) production year?
My Stihl dealer hasn't exactly been helpful.

I’m new here but I have a Stihl 044 ser# 140188352 can anyone tell me anything about it and maybe the value?IMG_2696.jpeg

Not a lot of luck with the IPL, in mentions that the saw with s/n X 30 991 111 was produced in '95, and the 044's name was changed to MS440 in 2001, so yours was produced somewhere in between; can't find more specific info than that.

That saw seems to have had a rough life... Value will mainly depend on the state of the cylinder/piston etc. If those are in good condition, and the saw holds pressure and vacuum, there's definitely some value there imo.

Thanks, I bought it for $250 and it runs great. I had a friend check it out. All he could tell me was that I had the best saw Stihl made and I should look it up

An 044 is great indeed, depends on your use case obviously. But together with my 026s I can tackle any job I would need to, the 50cc saws obviously being more 'nimble' (and also way less thirsty :) ).
I think the power to weight ratio of an 044 is just fantastic... Also, quite easy to work on.
I put an aftermarket exhaust on mine, which lets it breathe a bit better, also double dogs and a full wrap. Not that I 'need' those things per se but the saw runs and handles great.

Take care of that saw, is my advice

I don`t know the exact production date. Must be somewhere between spring 1997 up to autumn/winter 1998.
Can I ask how you are able to determine this?
I'm into the pre-MS Stihl saws and with the 'workshoppist' site being down I have no other way (that i know of) to find out about production years, or at least estimates, than the changes mentioned in the IPLs.
