Says who? Is this a local code thing? I have never heard such a thing. Double wall and insulted pipe is rated for 2" clearance to combustibles. I have a section running through my attic.

i know pipe isn't supposed to be exposed in a habitable area, or a closet. But I don't think double or triple wall makes any difference.
