The carb on the Poulan Pro SM4218 AV has those dang "pointed/splined" adjustment screws. Where can I pick up the proper tool for those?

Thanks!

I tried plenty of dealers here in OZ to get one of those splined drivers. I ended up buying it off some bloke on eBay from the States called Randys spares. Does the job nicely.

First copy this #....380116771535
Go to ebay and paste in # and click 'search'
Randy's Engine Repair...randysenginerepair ( 32002 )
$9.99 and $2.59 shipping.
Hope this helps,

Thanks guys! I have bought from Randy before, he is a good guy. Conversely, I was thinking about grinding the heads down & cutting a slot for a screwdriver blade...

That's what I been doing to um. The smallest cut off disk for the Dremel that I have works in a pinch. It makes the slot so big compared to the screw head, and it doesn't take much to break the ears off. Good deal on the Randy's link now I know where to get me one at.:greenchainsaw:

If you have an old zama carb around that has the limiter caps on it, pull the caps. Then put one cap over one of the jets. Close the jet clockwise and count the turns while using a small screwdriver. Then remove the jet completely turning counterclockwise, and either notch it with a dremel or a hacksaw. Re-install and reset, then do the other jet the same way. You can also use a small brass tube or sometimes a straight Bic ink pen minus the guts. It will press over the jet and hold to the splines for adjustment or removal.

Best wishes,
Bob

PS. Searched the net for the styles used on the Zama carbs and found this:

AS OF RIGHT NOW THERE ARE 5 STYLES OF CARBURETOR JETS.

#1 IS CALLED A SPLINE, FOR THIS STYLE I USED TO USE A BALL POINT PEN WITH THE INSIDE REMOVED.
#2 IS CALLED SINDLE D, THE SCREW HAS A FLAT SPOT ON ONE SIDE
#3 IS CALLED A DOUBLE D, OF COURSE FLAT SPOT ON TWO SIDE
#4 IS CALLED A PAC MAN TOOL, THIS IS ALMOST COMPLETLY ROUND EXCEPT FOR A SMALL V NOTCH IN SCREW.
#5 IS A COMPLETE FLAT SCREW HEAD WITH A SMALL DIMPLE IN IT.

A COMPANY CALLED GARDNER CARRIES 4 OF THEM www.GARDNERINC.COM

P/N FOR SPLINE TOOL IS 530 035 560
P/N FOR SINGLE D IS 308 535 001
P/N FOR DOUBLE D IS 308 535 002
P/N FOR PAC-MAN IS 308 535 003

Yes you can cut a slot in them, but its very hard to get a screwdriver on them when there running as theres nothing to guide the screwdriver to the needle.

I know the hard way just to get the right tool for the job as it makes it simple.

It's really a good setup that way, no tabs to trim, caps to pull and no Stihl dealers to argue with when getting those replacement caps for a 029.:)
