Sister and I inherited the family farm in NE Ohio. The Emerald Ash Borer will soon visit the woods on the farm and we are seriously thinking about having all the ash trees cut. The woods was logged by my father back in the 50s but he only took out the maple and a few oaks. Used the lumber to build two barns. Met a local farmer whose father lives next door to the farm late this summer. Bill has logged with horses parttime for years and has his mill set up at his father's. Sweet deal for him because the woods butts up to his father's property so transportation cost is zip. Bill offered me a deal where he will cut the ash, use only his horses which is a big plus for me as sister and I will not allow skidders in the woods, and will slash all the tops. My question is what is a fair price for both of us for this timber on the stump? Any guess will need to be in board feet and Bill will scale the logs. If not for the EAB infestation I would never have considered cutting any timber from the woods but not too keen on having a mess of dead trees cluttering up the woods either. We can always plant seedlings where we will lose the ash.

The Ohio DNR has a new program called "Call Before You Cut". Log onto www.callb4ucut.gov (I think thats it) for free info. I'm sorry to say that nearly all the loggers I've met/dealt with are money-grubbing liars and thieves who are only interested in how quickly and how much $$$ they can get, and to hell with the landowner and his property. Hopefully your neighbor is the exception to the rule.

Please PM me re: disposal of the tops!
