So you want to hire a tree guy, a one man show? This is your first problem, real tree guys aren't working alone. Tree work is a crew effort. Atleast 2 guys minumum.

I guess tree MDS was right. The cheapest tree service I know of in my area(im in NJ) is doing $1,000 a day and they have no insurance and old beat up equipment and during their lunch break they will ask you if you have a cold one in the fridge. Their work is what we tree guys call hacks.

Sure there is guys doing side work even cheaper than that with no phone number besides a cell, or a house number which rings to their mother's house since he lives in her basement, he even owns a saw and a pickup truck.

You want someone relaible, open the phone book, their is over 50 companies in your area to chose from. If you called the ads that are of full page and half page you will get a call back. Keep trying. These are the guys wanting work and have the staff, equipment, and telephone to call you back. Look for things like insured, licensed, NJ certified tree expert. If you are coming here looking for one tree guy to do a side job at a low wage while...you and the hungry tree guy driving states away is taking a chance. Roll the dice and next time use the Homeowner forum.

Before I lay into you I just want to clarify one thing- you are responding with your interpretations only and I understand, but not to belittle you:
I AM PRETY MUCH A ONE MAN BAND and I AM RELIBLE and ALL THE BELLS AND FREAKING WHISTLES. No, I can't do everything but skilled enough to be able to work on a very proffesional level with just about anybody, including a cheapskate homeowner for 400 a day. Not only that, I would love it.
Call my number and you get something, whether you want to hear what I say is another.
Am I a tree scab? you bet you sweet ass! Am I a hacK? I can be that too.
Now to some bragging and I hope you get real critical of my practices.
I will climb 150' poplar with no-one but myself, I will do removals by myself, I will take down and get rid of 150' poplar by myself. I will spend a day pruning huge trees by myself, I will spend all day pruning shrubs by myself, I will hook up the chipper by myself, I will lower branches by myself, even if there are others around. I will drop ten 100' pines in you driveway for a thousand dollars for the day by myself. I will pay my taxes and insurance with that money and go to the shop to have all of my less than 2 year old saws proffessionally tuned with new starter rope, even if its not needed. I will climb a 100' foot tree with a 50' foot rope, that rope is going on 8 years old, and it has always been 50' long from the day I rolled it off the spool and wipped its ends. While I was at it I wipped the ends of all my climbing lines that go from 50' to 200' in 50' increments, When I was done wipping the climbing lines I did the rigging lines and there is more of them than climbling lines. All have consistent strength throought their length. I will do this all with the same unlit cigar in my mouth all day.
That is just on Monday, the rest of the week I have a crew and I have to slow down as not to bury them.
Please don't take this like I think I am king ####, I am very humble and grateful just get out of the way please-Men at Work.

This is a weird thread.

How do you climb a 100' tree with a 50' rope?

I got hit in the face one day when the limb tied off above me swung the wrong way. It scared the hell out of me, darn near soiled my pants, and when I got somewhat awake again, I lowered my self down to the ground.

Since that day.... I am a firm believer in an easy way down after that incident. It would have been the better part of an hour for the ground guy to get help, if I couldn't get myself down.

I am small time too. Part time with two part time helpers. We pay almost 15% of our gross for insurance, but we do a good job, please the customer, and stay safe.

Cheers,
Charlie K.

geez...

What did I say? Come on its no bid deal, I ain't bragging that I am the best, heveans no. Just stating what I do and how I operate.
It seems some people who run companies don't like it when I do my own thing. Somehow my activities hurt the industry in ways they deem wrong. I guess that is OK but I see it - their activities and practises ain't much better.
I, obviously, would never teach anyone my ways. If fact when someone asks me to show them something substantial I tell them "no way!"
Most times when climbing there was no-one around with the capabilty of climbing up to save my ass, even at a company. With that in mind- I go with the grace of God and a voice in my head saying" don't F-up". This has worked for me for some time. Will it work for you? I don't know.

Yes, I can be a dumb ass

See, what i find weird is that you had a limb tie off ABOVE you.

I need lessons like that to teach me what not to do. It better not happen again, but I sure will have a rope long enough to get me down if it does!

Cheers,
Charlie K.

Gentleman, Thank you for the encouragement, I have the trees dropped and cut up on my own with my own crew. With some studying and thought things went exactly as planned. I appreciate the input and lessons learned on this forum. Thanks Again. PAN

Good, you did the right thing. Trust me buddy, they usually don't give you a whole hell of a lot of training when you first start in this business anyway. They just want to see what you got. Good job treemanpan

Thank You very much Treemandan. A lot of what you say is true, You have to pick up what you can when you can , it's not there to be given to you. The encouragement goes a long way! Thanks again :newbie:
