Hi; I have some relatives arguing about Stihl/Husky war. An rogue nephew went over the family tradition and bought himself a brand new Husky 346Xp.
neat moving little bugger I must add.

He asked me what to expect in the near future,as in how many tune ups ne might need and how often and so forth.

Didn`t wanted to mislead him I promised him I would ask you husky guys how a new 346 XP comports when breaking in and how many gallons of gas must one run thru until it finally arrives?

Thanks and God bless

they will start to pick up after a few tanks and by 10-15 tanks they are pretty much fully broken in. the best thing he can do is to buy a non-limited coil from ebay for about $30 and then do a muffler mod. if he has green-cap, cat model, he should pick up a non-cat muffler as well. both of these can be completed for about $75 and an hour's time. it will push this saw well into 60cc terrritory.

I ran mine hard for 9 years before it needed anything, except fuel line about every 3 years, do to ethanol in our gas here. Aside from the gas line, clutch springs are the only thing I've needed to replace, and a carb cleaning. Very good saw!!!

Just the normal way, nothing special with that model - make sure it is set a bit rich initially, and readjust at 10 tanks or so, to a "normal" setting.
Avoid extended cuts and too much WOT out of wood when it is new.

actualy this is something I fear myself; as I wait for my 346XP to arrive, I was wondering about carb tuning after breaking in a new saw.
and since I know nothing, I`ll have to take it to those numb nuts of dealers that we have over here.
Is there a such thing as "the complete idiot`s guide to chainsaw tuning" or something ?
another tempting thought is that muff mod.

what is "rich" and how can I tell the "normal"
what settings does it comes with ?

Mine came a bit too rich for my liking - but I have no idea how the US sold ones are set initially. It also depends on the dealer - they should check the setting, but not everyone does....

A tach and some common sense takes you a long way. Aim for 13500 or a bit less rpm for run-in, and lean it out to 13800-14000 after about 10 tanks - but you should listen to how it runs as well. If it isn't accellerating as it should, richen the low side a bit.

Mine was set up by the dealer at 13,500. I ran it for a while and it seemed the low side was a little lean, but not real bad. Went to adjust it and it was on the limiter stop. About 15 seconds with a die grinder and that problem was fixed. Didnt half to take the limiter caps off, just ground the stops off with them on the saw. The high side was about half way of its adjustment.

346s are pretty bullet proof. Dont run it unless you want to sell your stihl.;) :D
