The problem with running saws at part throttle is the carb is not made to be ran at part throttle (no real part throttle jets) (mtronic Included) they don’t supply enough or the right amount of fuel at part throttle and since it’s premixed will run lean.
they are as stated before to ran at idle full throttle or off.
I dont think Yamaha knows more about small 2 cycle engines then Stihl Husqvarna Echo which all state the same. What works on one engine does not alway transfer to another.

TK would be correct if the carbs were designed to run at various throttle position on a constant basis, but in a saw it’s not needed.
however the ms500i may be able to run part throttle but not 100% sure imo
Its about engine and metal, rpm and friction, not about carburettor or enginetype.

Happy New Year!

So my 391 met an untimely death (don't ask), so I was looking to upgrade to the 462 but no luck in finding one anywhere locally. Settled on the 661, more saw than I need for my usual cutting but would be nice to have when I need it. So it's been over ten years since I've had to break in a new saw, I know there's lots of advice and opinions on here on this - let it warm up, 3/4 throttle for 2-3 tanks, heat cycle the engine and of course run it like you stole it. I'm good with heat cycling and letting it warm up but does anyone actually run it 2-3 tanks at 3/4 throttle?

Nice! Now, pick up a 20-28” bar(s) and a couple 8tooth sprockets for smaller stuff 😁.
that saw prefers longer bars…to 42”… and isn’t quite as fast with small bars as the older 066 but it still screams.
mine normally wears a 28.
Enjoy.

I’m taking advice from Mark Twain on this one and tapping out.

I bet running your brand new saw at 100% all the time will give it a good run in.
So, whats the cost of that saw ?

Where are your priorities, soldier??? No guts, no glory!

Aren't we about due for an oil thread? It's been -- what? -- almost an hour?

Seems this thread has gotten side tracked, you have asked a fair question, and been given some good advice, I am sure you can see thru what is what, let us know how much you enjoy the saw when you have cut with it, i find a 25" bar is good and balances well if its just the E bar as its similar weight to the 36 ES light you have now if your not cutting big bits all the time, and its quicker to sharpen :).

Enjoy your new saw.

Congrats on the new saw! I also believe in being "gentle" with a new saw, but not babying it. Bear in mind though, that this is an M-Tronic model, and the brains inside compensate for the new condition. Running at part-throttle may also not be the best for the whole system. Use full throttle, but don't buck a 40" stump into 50 disks i.e. cut smaller stumps/branches and come off full throttle every now and then. That will give you enough "heat cycles" also!

After several tanks the saw will loosen up and start ripping!

Good luck, and let un know how it turns out!

Mike
