My biz has been up and running for one year now and things are going great. Now that I see that I can make this work I want to make some changes in preparation for the future. I'm working on a new permanent logo, going to incorporate after the first of the new year, and I want a new biz name before it's too late to change it. Currently I call it Mike's Tree Service, but I want something more official sounding. So far the only name I've come up w/ that I like is Arbor Works. Maybe Arbor Works Tree Care and Removal. I like it b/c the Arbor is self explanatory and being that it starts w/ an A would put me at the top of any indexes or listings I might advertise in.

I need some constructive criticism, so please feel free to express your thoughts, I would appreciate it oh so much!;)

It seems to me that when people are looking for tree work thats the word they prefer .. Arbor may be common to us but to the average person they think tree.

Good point, 5yrs ago I probably didn't know what arbo anything was.

Wish I had a cool last name to work into it.

Cross Cuts? Sounds funny to me.:(

When customers read an ad they visualize and relate the name to what they want done. Words like care, tree, removal, pruning, and service all fit the ideal, company names like “two guys with a chainsaw” give an impression other than professionalism. When you identify a personal name the first question is “who is this Mike”? Although it works great years latter when you have an established reputation.

A guy here in town has his operation named Arbor Works. Neat idea for a logo but too busy IMHO.

Personally I hate names like "Bob's Tree Care", etc.

Sounds too guy w/truck-ish. On the other hand, when I became "Nathan, the guy who does good tree work...." I got so many more references than when I was "XYZ Tree Expert Co..."

Styles and goals differ. I find amiable relationships with good work at a fair price gets me a ton a references. That works for me. Then I can call back a day or 2 later, etc... I can be much more relaxed.

Work has been crazy busy lately. Sure will be nice to leave town with full pockets....

Dang Nate,

You ruined my sense of originality.:D Guess someone, somewhere has thought of everything. While Christmas shopping w/ girlfriend yesterday all I could think was arbo, arbo, arbo, arbo what!?!?!?! All day this name change thing had been stuck in my head. Then we walked by a store named Leather Works, and it clicked, "Arbor Works." First thing I've come up w/ that I like.

I do feel like Mike's Tree Service sounds like the guy in the truck. Well I kinda still am that guy, but hey I'm trying to plan for the future and I do great work.

On the flip side, Mike's Tree Service is simple and most likely easier for Joe Blow to remember by personal association.

But I don't want Joe Blow clients, I want Dr. Joe Blow or Attorney at Law Joe Blow that lives in the upscale neighbor hoods. I would think those ritzy folk would sway toward a more corporate sounding name. I don't know, need to just pick something and go do some tree work!

Thanks for the great opinions, that's what I'm lookin' for!;)

For a project this spring my group came up with the name "Arbor One" I forget what the slogan was, but I liked the sound of the name.

I'd recommend keeping it short and simple. I went with Rhodies to Redwoods Tree Care. It is a PITA to fit on signs. Suppliers and customers are constantly butchering it.

When I first started, my company name had "Arbor Care" in it. People always said " What?... harbor care". I changed it to the name of a major road that runs through the area that I want to concentrate in (affluent area) with Tree Service after it. Business picked up and people always say " yeah I've heard of your company". I think that most people know the road so they remember the company.

:) How about using your last name and then add ... Arbor Care with the subtitle below it of "Tree Maintenance Service" or something like it?

Then advertise as an arborist, not a tree service. If your YP doesn't have a listing for arborists, tell them to make one and they will.

Say you do tree care instead of tree service if you want to focus on more than removals. I like the idea about naming after a major road that goes through the area you want to work in.

My last name is French for "Better", so I can say I'm Better Tree Care without bragging. Cross, let's see...too many negative connotations with that word, no offense. There's an Arbor Works in Raleigh NC too.

How about Capital Trees?
