When ever I look in the YP for a something, I skip over any of the alpha-numeric named companies. How about an original, creative thought? Those sort of games are so hokey.

TAlly I'ntl. Tree Svc...TITS...cute joke :)

Anything with international in the name should have something to do with being intrenational. Just because trees have Latin scientific names hardly makes them international.

Check with the attorney general's office about registered names for companies. You should be able to search their lists to see what is registered.

Is "srbor" unique enough to set you apart from the rest of the crowd? There might already be several other arbor variations. Then you become a part of the crowd not individual. Same goes for geographic names. In MN "lakes" variations abound and become generic.

Start thumbing through tree books. Look in the glossary and index for words at the beginning of the alphabet. You'll be surprised how many good names you'll find.

Stay away from cute and corny. Unless you want to be thought of as the comedian arborist.

On the web YP there are 14 listings for "Arbor Care" for FL.

We have a remodling rehab buisness called S&S Renew-All, LLC. It takes a while to get that across to someone over the phone. So maybe call a few freinds and nieghbors to see what they think.

That would probably rule out Ailanthus Tree Care, or Malus Prune-Us.

Some say that having your profession first helps with memorizing; Treeworkers of Tallahasse.

I have an aquaintance north of Greenbay with A Four Seasons Tree Care. You could say Two Seasons Tree Care? All Seasons?

How about using your first two initials M.(?.) Cross Full Service Tree Care .

Instead of using your city, how about the county you live in.

Does any one know if you need some type of permission to use the name of a city or town as part of your business name???

Thanks for all the great responses! I really like the street name idea and some of the other names have got my gears turnin'. I'll ponder through the holidays and make something official after the first.

Thanks,

Mike- I keep thinking of all the businesses around here that have done well with hometown beginnings and almost without fail they have had the last name used in a professional manner with the type of business. Using your first name seems to say that you just want to be a neighborhood business that doesn't want to go anywhere else. Using your last name also lets everyone know that your not ashamed of having everyone know who you are. If they have to look you up in the phone book-where do they go for "Mike"? At least if your last name is used they have a better chance of finding you.

"CROSS PROFESSIONAL TREE CARE" would be simple, direct and let everyone know exactly what you and how you do it !

IMHO

Most business advisors would choose to not have a personal name in the business name. Two tracks, one, do you want the company identified with a person or, do you want the business to stand on its own? Right now, the business is you. What happens if you decide to change the direction of the business? Move? Sell? Much easier and tidier to do without a personal moniker.

Let's see- Goodyear, Firestone, Ford, Boeing, Merril&Lynch,....etc.
Sorry Tom but I respectfully disagree- using your name shows people that you are standing behind your business not hiding behind some gimmick. If you move, so what, your in a different area and you start over again. If you sell, then the buyer knows that you have built a business on a name and that if the buyer doesn't treat the customers the same then he/she might as well not waste their $$$. If Mike decides to change the direction, then it's real simple to go Cross Professional Whatever - if he's treated his customers right before then there should be no shame in using your name again. Also using a last name could be easier for just a white page listing to avoid the price shoppers.

Sure, there are some company names that have made transitions. You named some of the most successful. Asplundh, Davey and Bartlett are closer to the bone. I believe that Hendrickson-the Care of Trees is now just TCT. But there are others, and more, that haven't made the jump.

When Dayton's bought the Marshall-Fields company they didn't change the MF name to Dayton's. Dayton's had made thier name in a smaller region than MF. In time, they changed the regional Dayton's stores over to MF.

Choosing or changing a name is a big decision. Its a good idea to use the forums for ideas. But, most of us are arbo-entrepeneurs, not marketing professionals. We expect our clients to come to the professionals, this is another example of where the advice of a pro would be needed.

What I was relating was advice I got from a pro, not anectodotal stories. Picking a non-personal name isn't a gimmick by a long shot.

Time to start a new thread...
