Are you cutting wood when tuning the saw. It is always easier to here the 4 stroking when you are going in and out of a cut.

I am but its some old wood thats been stacked in my backyard for about a year and a half so not really sure if that matters its also only about 10 inches in diameter

Are you saying I should take the baffle out?? wouldnt that be even less resistance added to whats already been done??

Anyway the saw is running stupid rich on top end right now so I guess its been 4 stroking the entire time? Im just worried about leaning it out to the point of damaging the piston it was much easing to tell when the L needle was getting to rich or lean.. this H needle I lean it out and it continues to sound the same.. I guess ill ask my boss to help me with it tomorrow at work if I cant get it dialed in by then..

I thought it would be a piece of cake to tune since I use to race Nitro fueled RC cars and have alot of experience tuning them.. Im just not sure about this "4 stroking" sound im suppose to be hearing I guess

Before I joined AS I read what the saw modders were doing with this series of saws and they were taking the baffle out; one modder went step by step taking the baffle out and placing a flat piece of metal instead of the stock muffler cover and making that muffler a dual port design (exhaust coming out each side of the muffler) you will feel the difference. Get another muffler take the baffle out and mod it and run your muffler then the modded muffler you can get another muffler off freebay for under $20

Mr. Snelling has a great video on here somewhere demonstrating a 4 stroking saw. Worth listening to even for stock saw users.

Also, you could check your muffler openings using the sphagetti method, which is the subject of another thread. If I recall it correctly, you want the muffler openings no more than 85% of the exhaust port opening. If you remove the muffler, then fill the exhaust port with (uncooked) sphagetti noodles, you can then count the number of noodles it took, remove 15% of them, and then check the openings of your muffler with the remainder to see if you are close to 85%. One of the coolest tips I've read on this site.

Good luck with your mods.

Thanks for the response.. hows my muffler mod look?? I keep thinking maybe I didnt open it up enough but dont want to go to much either

Looks fine from here. You can always tweak it later if you get antsy. However, it is easier to take more out than put some back in :msp_w00t:

Did you get your saw tuned. You will have to richen it up on the high side, and tweak the low to make it balanced again because of the difference created by the muffler mod. (If you're really interested in pursuing this in the future you may want to consider buying a wireless tachometer for your tuning needs). The tach will help you dial it in easier. (That is not to say you don't need to know how to tune by ear -- just a valuable tool in your box for what you need. Happy Sawing!

Well I never got it dialed in perfect.. it was still a little rich today so I put it up and grabbed a saw off the work truck.. but I did decide its to loud anyway so im going to be jb welding a plate in tonight to cover the big port and make the slot under the baffle a little bigger instead..
