Hello all, let me introduce myself as I'm a newb here. My name is Justin, I'm 18 from Lousiville Ky and I love chainsaws. :) My family burns heats with firewood and besides cutting for winter fire wood, I'm also a small-engine 2-cycle mechanic at a local small engine shop.

I started using my fathers MS290 Farm Boss a couple years ago and have recently been bitten by the bug. :) Now I run the Stihl RS chisel chain on that saw, and have purchased an MS170 for the lighter work. I've been doing some sidework lately, and hoepfully will have enough firewood this winter to sell some (and fund the purchase of a new MS460M. :p )

Just a quick couple of questions to get started here. Is there any way to safely mod a chisel chain for faster cutting performance? I'm sure this is done in saw racing, but would something like this be safe in real world cutting? Also, are there any engine mods to do on the MS290? Thanks a lot folks!

Justin

FHCW HE wants to mod his chain, but Posibly you just sold the idea of muffler mod here too.

Justin just do search at top of page for chain sharpening, just chains or
chain types. You'll find enough ideas, arguements (friendly) and really good
advice. :dizzy:

Do same search for muffler mods and you'll find enough to keep you reading
for some time. Just don't Sneak out and mod DAD'S with out him knowing, then again he may love it. Just kiddin!!

Have Fun & Welcome

When I first joined here I had an 029 that I modded with the help of another member here. That saw really woke itself up with the mod.
Jeff is correct...open it up, richen it up and have fun with it.

Well unfortunately my father passed away some time ago, so I guess the saw is mine now. Does the muffler mod increase the saws RPM's, or just make more torque through-out the rev-band? Thanks for the input guys.

Justin

It should increase the rpm's in the cut, you don't want the no load rpm's to go up much, if thay do the saw is running to lean. When you open up the exhust the saw will take in more air, this is why you need to richen the air fuel mixture. Yes power will increase a bit overall.
