Well now.. be kind now. This is my third year now heating with wood. Second year with pur new insert. We have a 3100i acc quadrafire insert. I have an Echo cs400 i use an a couple old hand me down craftsmans. When i was younger my dad would scold me for snapping handles and chipping them. So i learned to try and treat axes and mauls well. Have few old keen cutters, twp collins. Cheap figerglass 8lb maul. Had brother make me up a 10lb monster maul, all-steel handle. Thanks for the interest!

There we go. I see you're a fine man indeed - an Echo and a cheap maul. A man after my own heart. Hopefully you have a large moustache as well.

I bought another Echo a couple months ago. Love it. I think I'll stick with Echo's for quite a while.

So how much wood do you burn in a year?

Well this is our second year with the new insert. Last year was about 2 1/2 cords from December to early spring. This year we have about 4 cords cut split and stack about ready. And just got my hands on a bunch of shag hicky and oak! So im cutting till the cows come home.

Don't listen to that 3 saw and 5 saw plan talk. I have been here almost 6 months and only have 2 saws unless you count my folding hand saw.

You will need more then two saws when you get anything from sticks to big cedars to cut!!!

So far my Husky 555 with a 20 inch bar works fine on everything that I have touched. My much older Stihl 026 with its 20 inch bar does fine too but it is a bit slower. I rarely will see a log or tree over 40 inches so I do not expect to need a bigger saw, and the 555 is light enough to use for limbing. If I need a "bigger" saw, I can fit the Husky with a 24 inch skip tooth so even as big as a 4 foot diameter log would be no problem.

A 24" bar does not have 24"s of cutting length, more like 22" after bar mount/dawgs. The 555 seems to be a great saw but seriously if you have a 4' diameter tree you need to buck, id call a friend with a bigger saw... I am not saying anyone "needs" anything but I think it is good to have an adaptable choice in powerheads/bar lengths ect for what you plan on doing. I just bought a 555 and hope it is all you say it is, seems like a quality saw.

In all seriousness, my thought process is this: 1)If you have one chainsaw and plan to use it, then you need two (one quits running, pinched bar etc...) 2) Cover as many guide bar lengths with as few (or as many :)) saws as possible. Changing bars/or chains in the woods is lame. Id rather have 3 or 4 saws. I dont log or do tree service for a living i just cut a lot of firewood and like to fart around with saws and stuff, so i end up having occasion to use a 16", 20" and 24" bar in a pretty short span of time. To me the three saw plan is the minimum, unless you are strictly johnny-homeowner, then 2 will do just fine ;)

Welcome!!!!

It is a blast to run a bigger saw when you are use to older heavy slow saws. I rarely run anything but my 440, picked up a 028 and just sold it cause the big saw is awesome. I did pick up a Husky 55. Need to get the new chain on it and give a workout.

2 saws is nice to take with as stated above. Stuck bar, broken pull start, forgeting tools when chain jumps. It happens.

Those Echo's look really tempting. The guy I picked up the 55 has a few Echo's that he needs gone and will try pick up if price right.

I like that. Perfect words to fertilize the CAD in all of us.

Nice I split about eight cord a year and maybe half or slightly less by hand, I finally treated myself to a Gransfors Bruks splitting axe and a splitting maul even though they were a little expensive I'm glad I got them.
