So been debating what new saw to get. I knew was going with a stihl just not sure the size I wanted/needed. Which as we know can be 2 totally different things. Have had 2 stihls prior to this one and loved them both. First was an 032 my father had since before I was born. It was lost to a vehicle fire. Ran great even at over 20 years old with continual use. Second was a 310 it was an ok saw and was only purchased as that was all that was available where we were when the other burnt. Yeah kind of a pinch move. Still it is 14 years old and still runs great. Knocking down 20 plus cord a year and clearing duty.
Settled on the ms261 largely due to so many of you having good things to say about it among others. Below are pics of what it got to find for its first wood. Was hoping to break it in on some smaller stuff first but it was not to be. Straight to the 20" bar. Once I got the silly high side limiter removed (thank you all for that help as well) thing ran like a champ. What everyone says about it picking up power for the first few tanks is correct. I have ran about 3 tanks through it and by the time I was done tonight it pulled the 20" yellow chain great. I really wasn't sure how it would do with that size bar that early. Especially with how big and hard the wood was. Nice solid red oak. The bigger logs are yet to come I know the pics don't look like it but the other logs in back are as big or bigger than the bar pic. The base is going to make a table I think.
Just wanted to share that with you guys. Look forward to doing some more work on this saw in the coming months as I get into some more wood with it. Thinking a muffler mod as the exhaust port is pathetically sized on it. What a delight to handle. Nice and light and plenty of power. When I showed up with it my buddy laughed. It pulls its weight that's for sure. Hopefully this tree will be the exception to the rule as I expect to be cutting stuff a fair bit smaller normally. But it will burn and it was free so not going to argue. Can't wait to keep cutting on this monster.
