I was working for a friend today at his house. The guy is a retired cop who used to do some tree work on the side. He can't climb anymore, but still has a bunch of gear. So today I needed to lower a branch, and out comes the manila line. First time I have ever worked with manila like that.

Never had the misery of climbing with it, have used it as lowering line and it was no fun. Remember when running through crotches in winter time if tree was wet it would smoke and feel warm. Funny, I was looking through an current arborist catalog and they were selling wire core manilla flip lines, so it is still around and being used. My opinion is to hang that stuff in the museum and get out the braided line. ;)

It wasn't so bad. Back in the day of three strand Esterlon, grass was a looser lay, kinda like a 12 or 16 strand. But it was a 'lil rough on the palms.

manila ropes - pretty old

I don't climb it, but I still have it. These are from the mid to late 70's. It was a big step up when I went to Ben Meadow's and got a "modern" rope...probably the early to mid 80's.
