I'm helping my buddy get his firewood business up and running. We're trying to work out all the bottle necks. We still haven't found the best/fastest way to buck the rounds, but it's getting better. The next bottleneck is at the splitter. We have a TW6 with a 4 way. My experience has been with owb sized splits. For me, just about any round up to 24" only needs to go through the 4 way once. Well that's not the case for firewood! I can't believe how much the respliting slows you down.

After being on here for a time now, I realized the only solution was a Supersplit!

I called supersplit and talked to them. They were more then helpful. Long story short, I'm finally going to get to see one in action.

The plan is to set up the SS right off the outfeed table of the TW6. 1 guy running the TW6, 1 guy on the SS grabbing anything that needs to be resplit. Both feeding into the same conveyor.

I'll keep you guys posted on how it works.

Hey Joesell,
This is what I refer to as my redneck processor....it saved me quite a lot of time this past year...As I mentioned in a different post, I plan to build a wooden bucking table, load log length onto table with hoe forks, buck and then roll onto roller deck for moving to splitters. This year, I bucked onto the ground...that took too much time to load the roller deck. I don't have a 4 way, but the time savings we picked up using the SS HD over the Speeco was significant...Your TW6 4 way could eat the Speeco for lunch..lol..
The 10ft roller deck cost me about $250 and I got 6 of them. I have looked at conveyors, but can't justify the cost for what I do, so I went the manual route...

I need to add some sides to my gravity rollers so the bucked wood won't fall off, etc. I only process about 10 cord... In these photos, I had just picked up my SS and was just trying it out here, eventually moved it to the end of the roller deck. This SS HD was used by a guy for years as his commercial processor, not sure how many cords it has split...but I would have to guess....thousands..
I had to make some simple maintenance repairs, but she is one tough splitter....my son initially thought I was wasting time with this set up....he is now a believer...he experienced the time and labor saving... He also loves that SS HD...he says, "Dad, if you don't mind, I will work the Super Split, you can work that "slow Speeco"....funny how that has worked out.

Congrats on the purchase Joesell. You are going to love the SS. With the TW busting up the big ones and the SS and the SS doing the resplits you have the ultimate setup. I have the same situation, keep the hydro handy to split big/nasty/crotched ones, anything fairly straight gets thrown into the SS pile. Keep us posted once it arrives.

Sounds like a great setup. Splitting really is the bottleneck in any firewood selling operation due to the size splits needed for most customers. I would like to hear more once you get it.

J,
I have both . Your welcome to stop by. Bring help though. A TW 6 without 2 helpers is a waste. A SS needs at least 2 people too. I got a few cord of ash and oak to work with in the yard as well as soon as that white junk goes away.

Joesell, wait till you see how clean the SS splits too. The TW is a smasher, the SS is a cutter.

My low tech mass production

big round on ground, WHAMMO with maul, quarters and some outside chunks..

semi tire, quarter goes in, WHACKWHACKWHACK with fiskars, splits

...stack

I use my dual opposable biodrive grapplers quite a bit in production, speeds things up.

Yea you youngsters are always flexin yer muscles...some day you'll get old too and them big muscles won't be so useful no more !! No need to make fun of us old guys with our mechanical wiz bang toys.
:D

I'd like to stop by, but I think my SS will be here before I get a chance to drive to Jersey. Thanks for the invite though.;)

BWAHAHAHAHA! Tore up scrawny limping 63 yr old neogeezer....boss started calling me Chester from limping around...bad back bad elbow bad knee now..most important, BAD ATTITUDE! hehehehehe;)

I ain't riding no dang donkeys anymore, nope, started trying to restore/get running my wheel horse today....

SuperSplit! It's the best. I cut my rounds at the tree and throw them onto the trailer. I then back up the trailer right to the SS. The SS is placed where I can stack directly from there without having to move much. A well-streamlined process with no fancy conveyors, loaders, grapples, or expensive assistants. Of course, I can only do a cord or two at a time, but it's good for me. You bigger operators have different requirements, but this fits my bill perfectly.

Joe,
I meant JRider...he's just down the way a bit from me. But your invited as well. No need to drive the whole way...get a cheap flight out of Midway to Trenton Mercer on frontier. Bring some brat !!

Zog,
Like I said...someday you might get old...

Just don't change :)

It's funny, I've always thought the supersplit was pretty cool, but I never really thought I'd have one. Now that we have one ordered, I can't wait to try this thing out.

I'm like a kid waiting for xmas!

just use it with an open mind and think of it as a mechanical sledge hammer and you'll enjoy it. if brute force is your thing...slide over to the TW
its funny that a maul helps you read wood and helps you split and process and cut better too....helps you mentally too. so does the SS !!!

You got that right. Be sure to read the manual, as it gives good splitting advice as well.

A good mix would be to have the SS as the main splitter, and anything that took too long (or looked like it would require many hits) would go in a pile next to a hydraulic.

That make sense for the smaller stuff, but almost everything under 22" goes in the chipper. I have no control over that. They have to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

So really, I need the log lift on the TW6 just to get most of the rounds up to working height.

Not yet. They said it could take up to 2 weeks for it to ship. Hopefully not that long though.

I'm getting pretty impatient too!
