Hey fellas-

Boss recently purchased an 088 (880...whatever) Stock saw. ZERO mods. I believe it has a 40" bar on it. (Don't hold me to that..I'll find out for certain today) Has been run for a few months and he absolutley hates it. Wanted a 3120 in the first place, but couldn't wait for it to get shipped in. Opted for the Stihl. Will gladly trade the whole setup to someone who has a 3120XP in same condition. Please...no ragged out saws. No "parts" saws. This is a brand new saw that has been used over the last few months by professionals. We use nothing but high octane and Stihl High Performance 2 stroke mix. (50:1 ratio) We use Stihl bar oil. There is NOTHING wrong with this saw. We need a stock or very gently modified saw that will work all day, everyday without issue. I'm not sure if they do, but if the bar/chain on the Stihl is interachangable w/the Husky this trade would be for the powerhead only. Otherwise, bar/chain should be of comparable size/condition. Thanks!!!

Hi Chris, I'd keep the 088. The 3120 is a POS in comparison.
Are you using 3/8 pitch and have you opened up the muffler? If the answer in no it's no wonder it's a dog. A stock 3120 will only p$ss you off more and has half the resale value when used.
I'm sure I have ticked somebody off who wants to pry that 088 from you before you wise up.

I have to agree with Gypo , why is the 088 pi$$ing you guys off, cause if it is not cutting fast enough and you are wantng a 3120 , you will be just as pissed at it cause they are no better stock than the 088, open up the muffler on the 088 and put 3/8's chain on it

I used a friend's 3120XP and I'll just say I didn't like it to be nice. My friend apparently did not like his saw very much either, as he would use my 064 if he could.

Hey, Gypo and ehp, should I stop using .404 on my 084 and go to 3/8??? It seems to cut pretty good with the .404. My 084 is stock.

Alrighty then

Hey guys-

No, the saw is absolutley stock. (36" bar by the way) Have no idea how to go about converting the chain though. I would guess you pirate the bar/chain/sprocket from something else, but I don't know what from. Also have NNOOOO idea how to pop the muffler. Any suggestions or should he just buy a new one. If so, how much are they and who's got it? To answer the "why" question: He says it stalls under loads that it should slice right through and it's too ????ed heavy. I'm sure if it was cutting like a cracked-out beaver he'd keep it for sure. We've got a 395xp (stock) and he uses it 2:1 over the 088 because the 395 just seems to pull harder under big loads. Any way-Thank you all for your help and comments! I'll pass all the info along and see if he still wants to go through with it. All those interested parties should consider the offer still open until I find out otherwise. (I'm not disputing anyones advice..the answer seems clear enough to me, but it's not my saw.) Thanks again guys!!!!

Chris

All you have to do is changed your gear, to a 3/8's 8 tooth, and change the tip in your bar to a 3/8's tip, your stihl dealer should have a tip or he can order one for you, the gear is the same spline as your 395 , you will need to get a 3/8's chain in .063 gauge cause I am sure it is that now with the .404. do this and your boss will like it , it will cut alot faster , and yes on the 084 change it to 3/8's it will cut alot nicer

An O88 is heavy? Give him an old homelite or mac......then he can complain about the weight the vibes and how slow it cuts.

Some people's kids!

A little info.

Bare powerhead weights.Stihl 880,22.2 lbs.Husky 3120 ,22.9 lbs.Mcculloch Super pro 125 ,23 lbs. Homelite 2100S, 22lbs 10 oz.Not a lot of differences ,in weight,are there?

Stihl Contra GS - the heaviest one-man saw?

That'll teach me to open my mouth about the old workhorses. Give him a 090 stihl then.......I KNOW those are heavy.:)

The Contra GS was even heavier:
Contra GS - 1959 bis 1969 - 8,5 PS - 137 cm³ - 16,5 kg - Mit 2:1-Untersetzung (Getriebe). Leistungsstärkere Variante der Contra G.

16.5 kg equals about 36.3 lbs. ;)
