I have bought a brand new Stihl MS-180 chainsaw and have used it 4 times recently on some lighter jobs. I always read all instructions before using any power tool, and follow them :D My problem is the saw takes 5-6 pulls to think about firing before I move the choke to the "warm" setting, then 3-5 more pulls until the saw starts :( I think that this is too much for a "new" saw and often the saw will flood and take 20 or more pulls in the "warm" setting after sitting for awhile. :bang: I regapped the spark plug to the specifications in the manual as it was large at .022 from the factory. The book said it should be .020:( Anyways...........No difference.......the saw can be a REAL ????? to start. I am using Stihl 2 cycle oil at 50:1 Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated :D >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Talon

I assume it's still under warranty? You really should take it back to your dealer. It should start in just a few pulls, and when hot, one pull, or even a half pull...

My 180 starts relatively easy, just a few yanks cold, and hardly one hot. It does run rich though. I use a 2 gallon bottle of oil and add 1.8 gallons of 93, and with that it smokes just enough you can see it.

I got to say it guys. Sure glad my Poulans aren't PULL-ONS like that.

Have a 3 year old MS250c here with hot starting issues

Good compression, new pulse line, carb kit, carb check valve, compared fuel tank valves with a new one for resistance. About the only other thing I can think of is the coil and I don't care to pay the freight on this to see what happens. Owner borrowed a Poulan Pro 330 that I had bought from a site member here to fix up, needless to say I no longer have a 330. Since Stihls are a superior implement and since I am feeling really chipper today, I will offer somebody an awsome deal and trade this ms250C, with low mileage bar and sprocket for about 4-6(depending on condition) Poulans/Poulan Pros of series 3000 or similar on up, hurry a deal to trade your crap Poulans in on a sweet little Stihl that just needs a little TLC doesn't come around every day.

Samething here marco. Had a friend using a Stihl 024 and let him run my Poulan 3750 and 330. He made the comment if he had one of those saws he could cut is cutting time in half. He now owns the 330. I wouldnt sale my 3750 to him.
Sorry talon for the hijack, but we got to rub it in when we can on you stihl boys.

I would say take it back to the dealer also, you have problems you shouldn't be having. Usually these problems don't come up until your three months out of warranty, then you buy your saw again through Stihl's parts and service department. Kinda funny, Stihl parts, you would think they are 24k gold for what they charge.

You tinker with something your not suppose to and decide to take it in under warranty you might get the impression that your dealer had one of those beatles you see the Aboridginees roasting on a National Geographic special crawl in somewhere and die.

Yup.......still under warranty..........just wondering if I can avoid taking it in:bang:

You can avoid taking it in by living with it! Otherwise, take it in.

My 180 has none of the problems you describe. Starts easily cold, starts easily hot. If you flood it, it's next to impossible to start though...

mine is the same ,stihl 250 .i give it one pull full choke and then move it to run and give it another pull starts everytime when cold, when warm just pull and it'll start first pull, very easy to flood and once flooded the shows over

I Stihl.....LOL......have to pull the rope 5-6 times before it even thinks about starting.......then move it to half choke.....then 3-4 more pulls before it will start  When the saw is broken in:rock: Will it start more easy? I will take it back under warranty as the last resort:bang: Any other opinions on my Stihl MS 180 starting issues? This is my 1st chainsaw. I am a professional Mechanic by trade and am no dummy :jester: Thanks.........>>>>>>>>>>>Talon

Once it "thinks" about starting (I assume you mean fire and dies), moving it to the high start position ( not half choke), it should start first pull and rev high, then click the throttle and it will move to idle.

Take it back if it's not obvious.

Thanks for your advice.......the saw works exactly like I posted......When it starts.....it is on high idle......it is really starting to pee me off  I guess that I will take it back tomorrow under warranty :rockn: I will post again after I get it back so others can learn from my experience  >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Talon
