I went to a first responders information meeting to day in Laguna Beach Calif. It seems the first recorded appearance of the Red Palm weevil in the US was found in an affluent neighborhood there in Laguna a few weeks ago.
This pest has the potential to wreak havoc on many different palm species. Its normal range is throughout southwest Asia. It has migrated to parts of north Africa and has caused devastation to the date industry in the middle east. It has established its self in southern Europe
An alert Arborist removed an adult weevil from a dead phoenix date palm and this was I.D.ed as the dreaded red palm weevil. The scary part is he has been seeing them for the last two years on palm removals in that area.
The dieing palms were originally thought to be infected with Fusarium.
The CDFA and others are planing a full scale attack for a square mile around ground zero in hopes of eradicating this pest. But with at lest a two year head start, and them being strong flyers it could be iffy at best.
Any arborist in So. Ca. should become acquainted with this pest and be on the look out. Thanks. Beastmaster
