you boys need to come watch the premiere removal company of the northeast work. i'd put dollars to pennies saying no one can do it the way we do.

we put that 38ton anywhere. sure we might have to put some plywood down to get there but its worth it when you pluck 6k lb tops and put em in the chipper mouth and go to the next tree.

btw plywood isnt really all that fun.

last company i was at had a 23ton that doubled as the log truck.......want too bad of a machine. couldnt rotate fully around though.

I agree. Plywood sucks. At least you don't have to leap frog it. We did that at the last company I worked for. 16 sheets doesn't get you far when you have to go 1/4 mile. Nice crane!..... Mike

Talk about a plywood highway, OD, what a PITA. What you go after? Those dinky little pines?

And TV, That is a real tight looking unit, but it seriously needs some IH orange thrown at it.

This small crane op had to down a few shots prior to hooking this one up........

With that much reach I cant see him picking up much more than a chunk of firewood. That gives me the shivers.

Hey tree md, just went out to the gym and was thinking about the deaths you mentioned.

Didn't a couple of friends working together with a crane near wires have a couple of Mexican speaking groundies and they unhooked the ball when it was away from the wires and it just had to swing into them when they unhooked. They did not understand what they were told not to do. It got welded to the wire from the charge.

Then the op was electrocuted and his best friend tried to help and he too was killed?

Yep, you got it.

I wasn't there but heard the story from friends and family members. I had went to work for another service at the time but went back to work for his widow when she tried to keep the business going.

Here's the story that I heard:

They were doing a removal around some kind of large ditch or gully where they were stretching the cable out to get a piece to the other side of the gully. The owner was screaming at the Mexicans to not take the choker off. They thought that he was screaming at them to hurry up, took the choker off, cable swings back into lines and welds electrifying the truck.

It killed the owner instantly. His friend and worker of 40 years who had recently come down from Chicago to help him out went to shut the truck down and as soon as he touched it it killed him as well.

Here's what I can gather from working with the man:

It was not unusual for him to yell and scream on the job. The Mexicans probably thought that he didn't think they were moving fast enough. That would not have been out of the ordinary. I cannot fault the Mexicans. I had worked with them and they were good, hardworking guys. They just didn't speak much English and could not communicate well.

Working with the Man I had seen how close he would get to wires. I mean we went over, under and next to. He had come up working postage stamp drop zones in Chicago and you could tell by the way he worked the crane. He really pushed that crane for everything he could get out of it. If I learned anything from the guy it was the absolute limits of what you can do with a smallish crane. I learned a lot from him. I like to think I learned a lot of good things from him as well as from his mistakes.

Well, decided to postpone buying until spring "the nice little truck crane" I found as a big job I sold got canceled as the guy got "fired". Work has slowed more than usual at this time of year as well.

So we slopped a coat on the old dog....and here it is looking a little more presentable....

This one's beyond the brush and roller paint restoration stage I think.

They must have used the truck for the drop area to protect the landscape....good thinkin'

Aw, c'mon tv, a little fiberglass work and she'll be fine. It's already the right color, at least. lol Your truck looks good to me. Best not to dig a debt hole in these times, I think you made the right move for now. What are the stats on your truck, btw?

I bet we could. lol. I've been leaning towards a crane as opposed to a bucket but I don't even wanna know what the ins. costs will be in this state. I guess if you set up a crane business your operating costs aren't unreasonable but if I were to set it up under my tree service my rates will go through the roof. As it is I'm about ready to pack up and move to PA.

The most versatile unit as far as boom trucks go that i ran , was a Manitex 2892, mounted to a tandem Sterling carrier ..

C12 Cat
10speed eaton
diff locks ,axle locks
45T new holland pintle hitch
25 ft tridem air ride tag trailer

The Crane
28T
92 main ,26/46 jib...get rid of the pull out stinger in the jib and just rebolt the jib head back to the 26ft jib ..trust me ..you'll never want to use it after the first time ..

out and down out rigger's full outrigger/half /and straight down ..lots of stroke on the jacks and you can jam that unit any where ..

Pat DS50 LMI
Manitex steel cage man basket ..
Option to have a full 360 chart with a full 360 rotating circle ..which is what was in the one i ran ..

smooth as silk to run
