Poulan 3400 filters

You ain't seen nuttin' until you look in the carb box of my S25CVA!! I'm not talking dust, I'm talking a log worth of chips, lol.

My old 3700 that I cut those 45+ cords with in one summer didn't even have a filter when I got it, hadn't been in there for years, thats why I order rings for it, took it apart, chromed BORE!!! no scoring or even a hint of scratches, I put new rings in but it didn't need them. Had a 3400 it to had messed up filter, 120psi with no scratches, COVERED in grime an inch deep everywhere ran fine!!!
I had a 4000 filter cover and filter but sold those long ago
I only run wire mesh on my Stihl 028/038 saws, last forever, more air flow.
I agree some of this BS filter S***, my old 038 MagII has been on a landing it whole life with nothing but wire mesh filter.

I'm eye'n those 69.99 specials too!!! just for a truck box, sell later deal. But keep going to Countervibes as there 50 ish on feebay from time to time. 61+cc are great wood saws.

Hey was wondering, anyone have a 3400-4000 carb to adaptor gasket??, Their NLA, if not I may have to cut my own, got some gasket material in work.

Brad, screw the decals. your top cover should look like this. :msp_lol:

Oh man, do you know how to make a hot rodders blood boil! Either you tell me where to get one of those or, or, uhh.......man, I've got to have one of those:)

Yeah the 3400-4000 may not be the fastest of saws, however they will cut, and cut ,and cut, and cut, until you can't go no more. Their just a rugged beatable saw. If your a good porter you will wake them up like you can't believe.

lolol...Arrowhead posted all the numbers for the parts in the pioneer thread a while ago, he said Bailey's could source them. I bet there are a few fine folks up in canada that have a few of them lying around as well.

Looks like Ed deleted the ipl for the filter setup, P.M. him for the numbers and hook that 655 up.

Dave, I've got a decent used one for you. P.M. me your addy if you still need one.

I dont understand that either. I mean there a cheap saw to buy no if ands or butts about it but they get no respect because they really need a muffler mod and carb tune to run right.

On the other hand they will give $600-800 for a Sthil 361 and not blink a eye and tell you that they really need a muffler mod and carb tune to run like they should.

Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black to me.

Yeah, when I wrote that I was thinking along the lines of a 3400 Poulan in decent running shape I've seen them bring less than $50 and something like a 290 Stihl parts saw will bring twice that if not more. Same with the top handle saws, we both know there's nothing wrong with a Poulan 25 or even the Micro saws, but compare a like new 25 to a Stihl top handle, even one that's been abused and the Poulan comes up way short in price. I've used a Poulan (actually Craftsman 2.1) for several years and I doubt that you can find anything as reliable.

So, what about the 130 PSI on this 655? The thing will hang on the rope and not move? It's a low hour saw and the P&C look perfect? Surely this isn't normal compression. It starts and runs great. It feels more like 160-170 PSI, but it's a known good SnapOn guage. I'll have to test the P60 tomorrow night.

Are you testing it with the decomp out? The folks in the pioneer thread are more informed than in the poulan thread probably.
I think 160+ is about normal for these saws in good condition, but I have a tired old P60 that still runs great with 115psi that I'm going to restore this winter.
Maybe your saw was used more than it looks and taken care of.

new to me 5400

Hello to all, glad to have found this site.
I just aquired a 5400 that seems to be in good shape. The old owner said when he used it the last time about three years ago the saw was losing power and dying after start up. He said he gave it to someone to fix it and got it back and was no differant. He doesn't cut wood any more and it was in his way so i ended up with it. When i get it home i took the top cover off and it looks like the carb has been cleaned up and a new sparkplug, I didn't try to start it because the tank looks like a sewage pipe so I thought I would clean it out and install a new fuel hose and fuel filter and go from there. I've tried the search function and google to find a filter but all the sites say they are disc. Can a guy use a filter from something else?

Thank Scott

Like already stated, use what will fit the line you have, I perfer to find larger filters that weigh more than some smaller ones., but really any will work remember saws don't use a TON of fuel so even a cheap Poulan/Zamba ($2.00) one will work if needed. I paid $5.00 for 5 filters to my door the other day, Weedeater branded.
Use what you can find, IMO

I would try to clean the tank out best you can while your at it. I like the heavy felt covered Walbro type fuel filters, but most any will work. You might want to replace all fuel lines & ck to see if the tank vent is still operable. Will be a rubber duck-bill valve under that I think 7/16 screw with a hole in it on top of the tank. And a carb kit & cleaning, is just about standard procedure with these also. Post some pics of it when ya can. We like pics of big old Poulans...:D

Gregg,

I will post a few pics as soon as I can find the camera, wife had it last.

I have the tank soaking now trying to loosten up the junk in it. This has a 29inch bar, would I be better of running a 24 ?

Thanks again Scott

Scott that 5400 will laugh at that 29" bar, heck she'll pull a much larger bar if needed. Remember that is an 85cc saw. If you don't need a bar this size then so be it and run a smaller size.

I would say your right most of the time about this, but not this time.

The 5400 used a very large ID on the fuel line. Its 3/16" ID as a matter of fact and thats alot of volume to fill when starting it up.

To fix that, Poulan used a fuel filter with a check valve in it so I would reccomend staying with the orginal filter body if possible. The felts for that filter body style can still be had through Oregon and I belive Tillitson. The Oregon part # is 07-202 and it replaces Tillotson # 95-172.

If the fuel line is bad and most are, then that is a little bit of a problem as the only 3/16" ID fuel line that I can find is also 5/16" OD which is kinda large to get to fit through the original hole in the tank. It will go but its a ##### and it is not as flexable as I would like to see.

That is why I replaced all of mine with a 2 piece line setup. I used a Poulan 361 style bulkhead fitting so I could use a 1/8 X 3/16 line in the tank with the 3/16 x 5/16" line to the carb. With the smaller in tank line it dont seem to need the checkvalve filter that way.

A certain Poulan fan machinest is supposed to be reproducing the bulk head fittings sometime.

Good info as always Mark.

And when he does start cranking those fittings out, more than a few will head west to an ecentric Poulan/Homelite/McCulloch fan!:D
