Well we were supposed to clear a section of forest here in wonderful Iraq. Since I'm a professional loggger at home, it was decided I would run the show. The Iraqis would be there for the cameras and my LT would be there to answer questions from the press.
When we got where we're going the LT decided to take over the show. Did you know you don't need an undercut, or back cut? Nope. According to him just cut thru the tree at a 45 deg & it'll fall STRAIGHT DOWN.
Well most of them landed in the street, 1 landed thru a persons house, & the last 1 dropped just like he planned.
The Iraqi Colonel informed my LTC that next week the ONLY 1 allowed is me. He asked me to show him how I would do it if allowed. I told him to lay my hat where he wanted to have the tree drop, then dropped the stick within 5 degrees of that mark. I'm now in charge of "rebeautifying " that area. I get to work without any idiot press types, or Iraqi soldiers since they just get in my way asking for water.

Thank you for your service to your country. Come home soon.

They got trees there? Wow, never seen em on tv. Thought yall blowed em all up. Anyways, good for you, be carefull. Easy for me to say, I have never fell trees were lots of people wanted to kill me (looks ain't bullets). Be safe/Jim

A forest in Iraq? Please tell us more.

It sounds like you set them straight, though. ;)

Now that is funny!!!. I can relate to this as one time during my misguided guard years my LT was in charge of the WMD attack scenerio and got all of us killed. Only 2 of us fireman around trying to explain not to put us downwind of the bomb... basic hazmat!
I remember some trees in Kuwait. Reminded me of cedar stands here in Texas. What kind of trees? Stay safe!

I would bet cedars too.

I saw some eucs there.
In the far distance I saw some hills with enough elevation that they looked to have some pretty good vegitation.
I had a butter bar Lt that insisted I not drop start a saw. We didn't get along to well.
He straightend up and was scarce after a corporal promised him that he was going to drop his rifle and it was going to go off and hit the Lt right in the head. We barely saw him after that.

what kind of trees over there?

Date palm mostly, olive (Russian), something that looks like locust, but has HEAVY black sap, and cuts harder than red elm. We also got firs, & a few yews, and 2 other types I've never seen (& boy are they tough).

Even scarier, I WAS in Damage Control in the Navy. When we were mobilizing they issued our CBR (NBC) gear. I asked when we'll be fitted for the promask & if we'll do the radiac test at that time. The NBC guy here (Army) didn't even know what a radiac test was.

I though you cut the trees and the LT talks to the press sounded good.

No I did better, I got the IA to deal with the press. They have written questions give them to me, I write the answers, & they go on camera. This way they get used to dealing with stupid people and I don't have to.
Case in point, a reporter found out I'm American & asked me point blank if I kill trees since I can't kill innocent civilians. The IA Colonel had her credentials pulled.

Repeat after me. VODKA.

Make it atleast decent grade vodka, course then where you are perhaps ANY vodka is good vodka.I remember my airborne neighbor (501st) said dont bother sending DVD's when he was in afghanistan first time around,he could get vids before they ran first run here,so ughm, hows the local hooch or the imported grades and selections off base.
..........Inquiring minds you know...

Where in Iraq are you, I'm at Liberty. There's some trees by the creek but that's all I've seen.
Speaking of creeks, do you see the size of the fish here?
