For you, Justin, not much--it sounds like you have a sense of alternative targets already. but getting "dormant" and "advintitious" buds better defined makes it more probable that ANSI and ISA BMP's will be changed to reflect this understanding.

Then less specs will be written mandating cuts to >1/3 laterals, etc. So less trees will be hacked back that should be left with a fuller crown. No, this does not change the world, but it may change a big part of the tree world.

I'm such an excitable boy...

i think Guy's enthusiasm that powers his forging ahead and bringing these thoughts here; is a good thang. i think that is a lot of what these places are about.

On the Links and Respects Page of my lil'site (which will be updated someday if anyone has any other personal or helpful links); Dr. Ed Gilman's (U of FL.) Site is only 2nd in Tree Care referances; for respect to Doc Shigo. Under Reducing, Restoration, Practice Pruning etc. he treats some of the issues Guy speaks of and drives older ones deeper.

He says there is a differance between topping and reducing. Rather large advocate of subordinating (?) branches to a dominant leader. And / or reducing branches aggressive growth that are low, and will be removed in time; so that the wounds are smaller 5 years down the road etc. Also, if you do raise(non-mature), he says to also lower to maintain closer to the same leveraged pull on trunk.

i'm not in practice with all that; except in this storm damage sense. But without all this input; would still be wearing spikes; and didn't lose them over night.

Or, something like that,

Thanks KC that's a great site; there's a lot more to be seen and learned from thru his book--Illustrated Guide to Pruning--but the site has some new stuff too.

I was hoping to see more detail on pruning immediately after a storm; maybe it'll be added later. Dr. Gilman IS up on looking for targets at nodes, and properly adds a lot of conditions to the 1/3 rule.

Hey Nick C where's the owl?

I have got to admitt that I use Butchs technique and I get two TCI's every month. I usually just give the extra to my groundie/Jr. CLimber. If any of ya'll need some back issues, I have a stack about 2 ft high on the back of my toilet.

The subscription methods are killing me. I called up in October to change addresses. When looking at our account, they realized we're getting 3 subscriptions and paying for 1. So, she said she'd have to cut out one, but let us keep one extra free one and will mail it to the new address. :D

Might wanna keep them there after the MythBusters episode on aerosolized fecal matter.

its what these threads should read like

Important to know this stuff if you have a burning desire to do asexual propagation (cloning). The buds tell you where the hormone hotspots are. Auxins control elongation. The rootone you apply to the slant cut is cytokinin. If you cut at a bud (auxin center) and apply rooting hormone, there's gonna be a hormonal fistfight, and I tell ya, it's not gonna be pretty.
