Wild Blue Reliability ?

Rural Downeast Maine with only dial-up available; wireless is not reliable because of the topography. The lines are old and bandwidth is nil.
We're about to try satellite: Wild Blue is the least expensive and least whined about provider.

Just for you gear-heads  : when you post a jpeg pic it "lowers" like a slowmotion window blind. Can't get music, can't get video, can barely get the download for tuning a carb ! :blob2:
AND: more about what kind of digicams work outdoors well: rain, snow, cold.

I've got Wildblue, had it for about 2 years I think. If cable were an option, I'd swap. The only problem I've ever had was a bad modem and I had it replaced within 2 days. I've been trying to build a web page with my free space that they allow. Let's just say that I am not pleased with this part of their service. I have had all three packages and am currently using the middle tier. As long as you aren't downloading movies everyday, I doubt you will get cut back on your bandwith. My wife has been accused of logging on and then just hitting download on everything she can find and we don't usually have a problem. We might have a problem every once in a while, but it's usually dvd rips that we have downloaded that cause that. Overall, I am very pleased with the service.

wildblue internet

Wildblue's customer service SUCKS. If you have a problem, post install...good frickin' luck.

Wildblue does not answer their phones when you call your put on hold forever which racks up airtime on my cell phone. Was lied to and told by a tech that the repair man would come out and fix my slow system but NO SHOW!!! Been having problems with no help!!! Sytem is under warranty so thats why they wont come out! Bet ya when the warranty is over they will come out.. The Bandwith Fap is a crock. I pay 80 bucks a month and can not use the internet it is like dialup. Im sick of it. Better Business Bureau will fix the problem soon.

Buyer Beware

We had Hughes installed about 4 months ago and it worked fine for the first 2 weeks. However, 2 weeks after we signed the contract and had the equipment installed (look out for hidden costs in installation) they changed their Reasonable Use Policy (RUP). They put rolling bandwidth caps in place to where you can only download 200 MB in a 24 hour period on the residential account.. If you go over the 200 MB you are out of commission for 24 hours. 200 MB is not much. Don't expect to be able to download music, watch youtube or do anything you would think you could do with a broadband connection. All you can really do is surf. As long as you only surf the web and do email you will be fine but it's not really a broadband service. Hughes customer base has been revolting over this change in policy and there is talk of a class action lawsuit.

Go here and read the reviews for Hughes

What have you got now?

Man I would take that and be giggling. I am connected 21,000 kbps right now and sometimes I am on line for enough time to be able to read these posts.

Another question I have to all the satellite users out there, did anyone have to have a tree cut down to be able to get a signal? I live in the woods and dont think I have the clear southern view I keep reading about.

I have Dish network HD, but the dish is on the roof and just enough view to get the signal I need.

Thanks

It's going to be in the same general direction as your DN dish, but it's got to be a near perfect signal. You need a signal meter to do the dish setup. It's not near as easy as DN or Directv.

You need to remember too that the installers are contractors and not actually a part of Wildblue. They get to pick and choose where and when to go. I was in the process of getting setup for the installs, but changed my mind when I had to wait 2 months for a school date to come around.

I'm on a wireless deal and I just got 848 kbps (106KB) down and 382kbps (47.75KB) up from Kentucky to Atlanta and 933 kbps (116KB) down and 244 kbps (30.5KB) up from Ky to to SF.

I might add that it's working pretty good tonight and that is not the norm.

What I don't like about this wireless service is that it works great one second and not at all the next. If a page doesn't load, go get a glass of something and try again in 2 minutes.

When I got my Houghs,I bought a large dish for the roof mount that would take care of two LBN and the high speed internet.I could run four tvs and the internet with no problems. Like I said before I was satified with the setup until I was able to get ATT which was a lot cheaper and a little faster. I paid five hundred dollars for the special antenna just so I would not have two antennas in the yard, and then I had a disagreement with direct tv and I when with dish network and ended up with the two dishes anyhow. If I ever get the time I will take the Houghs

dish down and get it out of the way.

Hey Ship: Have you lost your mind ? :( This is the ArborSite. We don't need "....to HAVE a tree cut down. "
Who do you think we are ???
LMFAO :jawdrop:

Whoa. I think you dropped a decimal. If you're getting 24,000kbps on dial up i gotta get the name of that modem.

That's 24Mbps.. or about 10 times faster than the best DSL out there right now!

I guess your right. I just looked at task manager and it showed 21kbps. I would take a picture of the screen, but dont know how and Netzero doesn't seem to let one do much like AOL did.

I had to cut a tree down to get a good signal for dish network when I was out in the woods about 10 years ago. That was my old Husky 51 days... Now I have better saws to hack around with... :)
