First of all excellent site. I have an 045AV in excellent condition, but it weighs a ton. In the future I'm going to be cutting firewood to supplement oil heat in my home. I hope to provide more of the heat through wood as opposed to oil. I also have 10 acres at home that I need to clean up. My question is do I purchase the MS 260 for the cleanup and most of the firewood, and use the 045 for the really large stuff. Or, do I purchase the MS280 and use it for most everything, and anticipate purchasing an inexpensive frog hair saw in the future?

Personally, I'd get the 260 and use the 045. There really isn't a huge difference between the 260 and the 280.

If you just want one saw, get an MS361..

There are many prior threads (you can find them with the search feature (if it works) arguing the issues of 260 verses 280 verse 270 etc etc...

I've been playing hooky from work for many hours using the search, when it does work. I think I've read most of the 260,270,280 threads. No one ever introduced the variable of using a 25lbs 045 to supplement the use of a 260. I wanted to see what others though of that combination? Or should I look for the three saw combination of the 045, a 280, and then a trim saw?

Ditto.

Skip the 270/280, and get the 260, or better yet, the 361. You're fortunate in that you're just cutting firewood, and not professionally. Don't overthink your saw combo amongst the 260, 270, and 280. Think of it as you'll have one big saw, and one medium range saw.

Welcome to AS.

+1 on both previous responses.

In the post linked below, my response was directed at someone who was trying to determine whether they could do all their cutting with a <40cc saw, but the three-saw discussion is equally applicable here. http://arboristsite.com/showthread.php?p=436356#post12

This general scenario gets asked enough that I'm working on putting everybody's thoughts together into "which chainsaw should I buy" and "the three-saw system" pages on my website. Stay tuned...

Umm, I used to run an 045 Super, and believe it is only a couple pounds heavier than current saws of similar displacement, if that. Prolly 16-17 lb dry, powerhead only. Just use it, it was a great saw.

The 270/280 aren't bad saws, but they weight nearly as much as the 361, with only a fraction of the added power over the 260. The 270/280 has much better antivibe than the 260 though, if that means anything to you.

I think I would have opted for the 361, to reduce the need for using the 045 as much as possible. :biggrinbounce2:

....then I would consider the need for a smaller saw and/or a brushcutter later.

In the case of 270 less with 280 you can get near pro saw with much less money.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm leaning towards the 260, even thought the anti vibe isn't as effective as that on the 280.

The 280 has the same antivibe system as the 260...

This is the first time I have seen such a statement from anyone, and coming from you I will have to take it seriously.

The only explanation I can think of, is that you were thinking of the 028. :dizzy:

Along with some of the confusion regarding antivibe mentioned by Saw Troll, why do earlier Stihl catalogues show the 260 having more hp that the 06 catalogue?

Yes. The saw was "muffled" back to 3.2hp to meet EPA. Easy fix though...

Opps, brain fart.... yes, thinking 028. Too much home brew (Thanks Tim!). Yes, the 280 is slightly better the 260, but the 260 really doesn't have a AV problem, other than in some climates maybe too soft.

I don't consider the 270/280 to have anything radical in term of AV. I've used the 270 and it's "o.k., but... All they did was replace the top left buffer with a spring. The rest (3) are rubber.

On the other hand, the AV system used in the 361 is a major improvement.
