I have an old 056 AV super which needs some work. I replaced the air and fuel filters which gave it a little power, but it is still pretty gutless, for an 80 some cc saw. It has good compression and is not beat up. It needs a new clutch. I like this saw and would like to pep it up, can any one help?

Aside from what you've done, check that your muffler isn't clogged up. You should be able to remove the covers on 056 mufflers. Look at the screens, if any. Spark plugs are cheap, though some will say they don't go bad. Your carb may be out of tune. Search the forum for carb tuning and will learn more than you will ever need to know.

FYI, You should be able to install a Magnum muffler on your Super. It has the extra pipe that exhausts above the bar cover. Only thing you need to check is that the jug has the proper fin configuration for clearance.

An 056 Super will be 87cc. Got one of those, and a Mag also. Why does it need a new clutch?

There are Stihl mechanics that hang out around here, who will know more. Hopefully they chime in.

Good luck, Chris B.

everything you said has been done. New spark plug, clean mag muffler and the carb should be close if not spot on. I need a new clutch because the old one flew apart. thanks for the info.

At this point, it's hard to armchair troubleshoot it. Maybe the ignition is failing. I'll you this: my 075 switch quit working so I have to choke it to shut it off. I got to the point where I just left the switch in the off position. I gradually noticed that it wasn't cutting very well, so I checked the usual stuff. In the cut, I flipped the switch to on and it started running perfect again. It was sort-of grounding, not well enough to shut the engine off but enough to weaken the spark. I have yet to fix the problem.

Does it sound rich? Some of those carbs were a fixed jet inside with an adjuster screw on the hi side. The jet wore. It could be replaced with a check valve without a jet, making it fully adjustable again. Also, make sure the piston isn't worn. That was the major cause of power loss on a 56

My ignition swtch does not work either. As far as really going through the saw and looking at the piston i have not done that. Like I said, it has good compression. If you could, give me any prices for replacement ignition,piston/jug,and clutch. Thanks

Your best bet is to check with the people on this forum. SOMEONE will have the parts you need. Many of these parts are obsolete from Stihl, Ron's Saw Shop would be a good bet.
