I have an old (apparently there is a new) Echo 400 EVL. I bought it in the mid? 80's. Is there a major difference between the old and the new? Mine still runs good but I'm not sure what the best chain is for it. It has a 16" bar. I currently use a Stihl 23RMC3 66E chain. Is there a better chain? I'm not a professional logger, just use it around the farm. Thanks

The new one is just a "CS-400", not an "evil". The two have nothing in common other than being a chainsaw made by Echo. The old one is a heavy, slow magnesium beast that is indestructible, the new one is much more powerful but all plastic. I have found RM chains to be better for work around the farm, as they're slower to dull and easier to hand sharpen after things like hitting an old fence insulator embedded in a hedgerow tree. Ask me how I know!

I have found that the older Echo saws do great with a huge extra hole in the muffler. Mine (510 EVL) has a small straight pipe, it can wake the dead but it really rips compared to the factory muffler.

I've used Stihl, Oregon, and Carlton chain with my Echo CS 500 EVL. They all work.

The other day I ran a side-by-side comparison of the 500 EVL with a Stihl MS290 while cutting elm. I put away the 290 and finished the job with the Echo. 'Nuff said.
