....if you read my "Rant Thread" you will know that I have an old Husky 185CD.

I had the sparkplug wire go south on me, which I've fixed, but the saw will NOT start.

I took the carb apart and cleaned it, it looked fine, not really dirty or such. I cleaned it and used compressed air to blow all the holes and passages (I'm a motorcycle mechanic, so carbs are not scary).

Now the plug is giving good spark, there is good compression, and there is new fresh gas in the tank.

The plug get soaked, very soon.

What I would like to know is the High "H" and Low "L" mixture screws, can you give me a ballpark number of turns out from full in?

Also, are these air mix screws, or fuel mix screws?

Anything else I might be missing?

I REALLY need to get this saw running, or I'm going to miss out on my free wood!

Cheers!

If the carb is OK, "one turn out from lightly seated". It will start then fine tune.
There is tons of threads about this here, a search will give a lot.

As for the spark............
Try ether in the carb, if it ignits on that then leave it till you got the carb straight.

If it does not ignite with a big blue spark and ether it is strange.

Those screws are fuel mix screws. On most older saws the ball park is one full turn out. On newer E.P.A. stuff they can be 4 turns out (very fine threads and long tapered needles).

Try 1 1/2 turns as a starting point. Both screws are fuel controls, so opening them gives a richer mixture.

Well, it is strange....

It seems to be carb related.

I got it running for about 5 minutes, it bogged like heck, but then it stopped and has not gone since, and not for lack of trying.

One good thing to report is the saw is much lighter now, I must have taken about 2 lbs of crap out of it when I took the whole saw apart.

I did not take the cylinder off, but that is about all I left in place.

I've checked everything I can think of, all the wires have been checked for continuity, any grounds have been improved, etc.

Now the saw fills the muffler half full of gas, liquid raw gas!!!!

I'm going to take the carb apart again and clean it in the sonic cleaner I use for my bike carbs, that will get it super clean.

I'll get it running like a dream, just you wait!

Cheers!

Yeah what Cahoon said, air leaks do not fill the muffler up with gas.

Better yet, go ahead and get a full carb kit with a new needle and stop
wasting too much time on a simple carb problem

I would in a heartbeat, but..........Husky Japan does not even want to sell me a sparkplug for my saw, what chance is there they will have a carb kit??

I took the carb apart again, and I put it in my sonic cleaner, it is CLEAN now.

When you guys say "Air Leak" are we talking about in the carb?

Please advise, I'm about to take up stamp collecting.....

Now, I'm not actually suggesting someone should do this, because it would of course be unethical, but just as an (ahem)hypothetical scenario........

Say a person has access to a bunch of free wood, but can't get it cuz their only saw is busted and the only person to get parts from won't give them the time of day, and the other place to buy parts from will take weeks to deliver the parts. This person could buy a cheapo pile of Poulan or Homelite saw from a home improvement store, use it to cash in on the free wood, then unplug the sparkplug and return it cuz "it broke." Having cashed in on the free wood, they could order parts for their good saw at their leisure.

Again, just a hypothetical scenario........ :blob2:

Totally, as I'm in Japan, and as soon as I open the box, they would not want to take it back for love or money!

No dodo...

He was not referring to an air leak in the carb, but elsewhere in the saw, but
it is likely not the problem, but the problem is in the needle/seat area.
I have no idea what the chainsaw shop scene is like over there, but find
another small engine shop. Any shop should be able to get the kit you need,
if not, anyone of us could mail you a kit. Echo and Shindaiwa are made
over there, and surely you could score a carb needle somewhere, at least.
Just take the whole carb to any other shop, it is likely either a walbro or
zama, maybe a tillitson, but the needles will interchange.

It is a "Tillitson" for sure, a 30B or something, I forgot to right it down.

My kids are in Canada at the momment, they are coming back to Japan on the 8th of Jan, I don't know if I can wait that long, but at least the shipping would be free!

Cheers!

Hi Stu,

I'd make sure the needle in the carb is seating correctly and that you have proper adjustment for the lever position. Getting that much gas sounds like a carb problem for sure.

If you pull it 100 times with the choke on it does.

Kanichiwa, ( hope I didn't butcher that to bad )
Here's a IPL for your saw. I don't know if it will help you or not. The Husqvarna number for that carb kit is 501 22 34 01 which is the same as the tillotson number RK23HS ($6.95 USD). A complete carb is Husqvarna number 501 61 51 01 ($89.55 USD). I'm trying to get the instructions on the carb rebuild to attatch but, I'm having problems. If i get it to work I'll attatch it to another post.
