I had a little pine removal today and when I got about 10ft up I noticed the clamps for an old lightning protection system mounted in the tree spaced out about 36 inches all the way up the trunk of the tree. The ground wire was missing, but the hardware was still in there. After taking care not to hit any of the hardware with my saw what was the first thing I hit when I started blocking up the wood after I dropped the spar? A frickin nail about 3ft off the ground. Life can be agrivating sometimes.

I dont mind the ones that I know about, its the surprises that are a pain the the keyster. Nothing like blocking up some wood and feeling and hearing the tell tell ratteling of hitting a nail to screw with your serenity.

I got to strip out an old lightning pro system last week. The copper wire pile is heavy...it should translate into some nice coin so that I can buy more climbing gear

The tree was being pruned so that it can be used as a teaching tree. Having the cables in the tree would be a problem for student climbers. The top of the cables were about 15-20 feet inside the crown anyway so there was little or no protection.

Unfortunately the copper was already removed or else I would have about 70 ft of scrap copper to take to the scrap metal dealer. Im kinda curious as to who removed it. I know we have had a problem here in Colorado Springs with crack heads stealing the copper from light poles, but this tree was in a gated community up in the Broadmoor. Our company has been deep root feeding the trees at this property for years and when I told the owner about what I had found he had no idea that the system had been there, but stated that it didnt surprise him. I guess its another one of those wierd things that you run into from time to time.
