I have an old McCulloch 1-41 or something. Looks like the 1-41 because of the stub of an exaust instead of a canister. The Carberator is a big blocky looking thing. Might be a Tillotson, but there is no lables or markings. The needle & seat are bad I think. The diaphram doesn't have a hole but is streached out some. The filter area & gasket & cloth like reed valves in that section of the carb look like new.

Starts but chuggs down enough gas to drown itself after a few seconds. The High & Low speed adjustment screws don't do much. The High Speed actually makes a difference to get things started..lean it out to start.

Any ideas where those type vintage parts are available? Even better can a later style carb be retro fitted? Maybe those later versions of the 80cc saw had a more sophisticated carb?

If I'm on the wrong track with my diagnosis..please chime in. Pride not an issue here....lost it years ago. I've seen motorcycle two strokes act like this when the reed valves were shot. The air charge would cycle back and forth over the venturi section of the carb and continue to pick up fuel....until the thing drown.

Thanks in advance for you thoughts.

Sounds like you got it right. Needle and seat seem to be bad. Two saws I've worked on both flooded out to the point that I could see the fuel dribble out the high speed jet into the venturi. Both were leaky needles, but neither were reed valve engines. Look that carb over for a make and model number. Ought to be engraved somewhere. Should be able to get parts. If not, I've always wondered if you could put valve grinding compound on metal needle/seats and fit them perfectly. Most of my stuff is rubber tipped needles, so never had a chance to find out.

Hopefully someone here who more experience fooling with old carbs will chime in.

After a moment's reflection, Mike's Acres website might list the carbs available w/ this saw.

I dug around on the Chainsaw Collectors Corner website....I'm thinking my McCulloch is most like the 1-46 from the pictures. I have that three point mounted handle like the 1-46. There is no picture of the 1-45 so its possibly one of those. Also the carb isn't like any of the Tillotson's shown. Must be that McCulloch Model 68721 or something close. It has a square diaphram area instead of the round like a Tillotson. Both 1-45 & 1-46 are listed with a McCulloch carb. The only thing different from mine and the 1-46 pictured is the muffler..I have a stubby square little muffler instead of the round canister shown on the 1-46 picture...My exhause looks like the one shown for the 1-41 but the handle on the 1-41 shown is not like mine..

Any ideas where a needle and seat for one of these odd ball McCulloch carburetors might be?

I'd say, look at randy duncan for parts, he's got a lot of older parts for these types of saws. He's an ebay seller running Randys engine repair store on ebay, so take a look, he just might have what you seek, or you could ask him whether or not he's got the parts, it'll probably be a day or two before he gets back to you with an answer of yes or no.

Well Old-saw.....your advice paid off. Thankyou very much. Randy's got me intouch with a LOCAL guy who just happens to have EVERYTHING I need in stock. And I found out exactly what I have. Its a 1-45. Thanks

Weime: I'd like to hear who got your parts for you. I've been dealing some with Randy, but my results haven't been the best. I'm still waiting to hear back on something after two weeks.. Also, have you looked at mike acres' carbs page?

I was refered to Bob's Lawn Mower Service, 607-638-9297 by Randy's. It paid off as he had the parts and was also interested in preserving the old McCollochs. He's local to me so it worked well.

I still need to get some stuff. I would like to freshen up the top end and get some points...next pay check. Any other folks out there who stocks this stuff please speak up!!! There is obviously a market.
