Somebody out there must have a Partner (Skilsaw) model 1629. First whats the specs on this saw. Then I need some help with the starter pawls. The PO had the pawls apart so I don't think they are together correctly. I have tried a few different assembly methods but they just won't engage. It looks simple but has me baffled. Can someone either pull theirs apart and take a photo or does someone have a IPL. It's a yard sale special.

Thanks Dan but my pawls a quite different, from those show. There are two 'U' shaped plates 1/2 wide that are spring loaded and they fly out and bite/wedge the drum. I may post a pic later

I know the kind of thing you mean.

When you say they don't seem to be assembled right are you having trouble getting them to engage when assembled on the saw?

They assemble just fine. When I got the saw one of the pawls was on backwards, they have a sharp edge and a dull one, the sharp one is supposed to grab the drum, this happens when the cetrifical force turns the cam a little forcing the pawls out. I think the springs are too strong as it will grap but near the end of the pull on the rope. The assembly goes like this, you have the starter itself the goes a spring washer then a fiber washer then the pawl mechanism then a fiber washer then a spring then a large flat washer and finally a c clip.

Something like this?

I don't know if you are more used to using more modern saws, but I know I thought that the recoil was bust when I first tried to use my Contra with this type of assembly.

It's more of a take it by surprise kind of technique required. A sharp jerk and it does only catch towards the end of the pull, so I would suppose that you need to ensure you have the correct, full length pull chord on the saw too.

Dan thanks thats the one. Mine has a wave washer on the rope side but the rest is the same. And I bet you are correct on the long rope as this one does seem short even by todays standards. I see the sharp pawl edges are shown with arrows and that is how my saw is now. I will get a longer rope and give it a try. It did start up with fresh fuel, that surpized me and it cut good. Look like a decent saw for it's age. Do you have any specs on it?? I checkek Mike Acres site and it's not listed.
Thanks again
Bob

Sorry Bob, I don't know the specs for it. The doc I posted earlier was the closest to that number I could find. I also looked on Mikes site with the same result as you. Are you definite on that model No?

Well I have it fixed. Longer rope didn't help. I played with it for an hour or some and came to the conclusion the two friction washers are either worn out or compacted. So I found a thin washer and added it and it works like it's supposed to. Saw runs great, won't be with me long. Really no need for it.
Thanks again Dan.
