was weed eating behind my shop and looked over the edge at a stump iv'e seen thousands of times but never noticed these holes drilled in it ,or the notch ,it looks like a springboard notch ,but there's different holes drilled also ,stacked side by side ,a different type of spring board maybe ? but 2 more out of place ,are these spring board holes ? or maybe they would drill to find if rotten or not before felling ?View attachment 297434View attachment 297436View attachment 297437View attachment 297438View attachment 297439

That looks like it was notched for a guyline stump and the holes used to have spikes in them where they nailed the line. Normally there would be around 20 spikes in a guyline stump but not necesarily all where you see those spikes. Alternatively they might have used staples which would take about half that many but of course the same number of holes.

I could be wrong about the holes but that sure isn't a spring board notch. Now that I am looking at the holes again I'm thinking wood pecker although the notch was made for a strap, guyline, something.

I was thinking woodpecker too. Not knowing a damn thing about how things in the PNW work I kept my mouth shut!

the side with 8 or 10 holes ,they all seem to be in a line together and sides of holes were flat like sawed in or drilled somehow ,there was an old logging railroad several hundred away from this stump ,its no longer there from early 1900s ,im told by my step dad the old hwy 112 when was horse and buggy days used to go through part of my property, hwy 112 routes along the old railroad now ,wonder if it was some kind of rigging stump from back then ,the way that notch is faced is aimed towards that old road ,its a skid type road now ,but still there part of it's there

Looked it all over again and I have to say woodpecker holes for sure. Ever look at woodpecker holes? They are square. It is the way they chip them out. Also they will make them in a vertical line just like some of your pictures. Of course the holes are old and rot has obscured things but my vote, woodpecker.
The notch though not a springboard, notched for a strap more then likely.

just a thought there wasn't a loading deck nearby??? could be it rigged for that

the whole area was logged long time ago when there was big trees there ,i'm sure they loaded on the train that used to go through there ,i have some remnants of cedar stumps maybe 8 feet across out back ,there is a creek down below that stump and its real steep ,i don't know how they moved the wood back then ,maybe some kind of rigging tie down for getting the logs out ,i may have to take a walk and see if anymore like this one in the area
