I have this old saw, but I don't think I will cut more then one cut whit it just for the fun :dizzy: Something like this is not for cutting this day's, it's just fun to own and fix up :)

No one could ever argue about a new saw being easier, safer, and probably faster to use. If you do you're just kidding yourself.

But personally, I prefer the oldies just for the sense of keeping the heritage alive-if that makes any sense. Dad taught me to run his XL-12 when I was about 12 years old, and I've been using Homelites ever since. I've run a couple newer Stihls and they were nice and civilized to run, but I didn't feel at all bad about going back to my Super EZ.

If you make your living with a chainsaw, then it's a whole other story. But for me, I'll keep the old dogs. I actually promote the bias towards the new saws, it makes the older ones easier to buy cheap.

I really enjoyed this post. I completely agree with the heritage concept. Most of us spend a silly amount of time on this site because saws are as much of a hobby as a tool. To only run the newest and the quickest is to miss out on half of the fun here. Using an oldie like an XL-12 or an old Pioneer to cut up a load of wood now and then is a little like taking a ride in an old car. Maybe not what you want to run everyday, but a good change of pace and a taste of how it used to be.

Of course, like Habenero said, if you make your living with a saw, then you want to be running the newer stuff. But otherwise, the oldies should be taken out and run now and then. Heck, the sounds alone are worth the effort.

Well I don't know what an MS361 is but if its a Stihl I would gladly buy one but only after it was demo'd and put up against my Homy. As I stated earlier in this thread the last time I sawed against a Stihl my Homy blew it away. My neihbor was Stihl man his whole life, he now is also cutting wth the Homy. We cut side beside for a couple of yrs and he finally saw how much wood I was cutting and decided to get one too. So someone is going to have to show me. Its a hard thing to rap myself around right now. Everyone here talking about how antique the SuperXL is and how a person couldn't possibly cut very much wood with one today....and I use mine everyday this time of yr and put countless hours on it... happy hours at that. AND the only thing I do is add gas and oil. They run great. This past 2 weeks I've probably cut close to a cord a day 3-4 days a week. I'm willing to intertain the idea I just don't know any better but right now I'm not sure I want to spend several hundred dollars to risk a disappointment.

well if Al gets the Ohio GTG going

Maybe casey forest will let you run his 361. Or maybe yours will outcut it.. But I seriously doubt it. The Xl is a great dependable saw. But it is not even in todays league of speed cutting IMHO
