Hi guys. Just wondering what your thought are on the older Sachs saws. Models such as the 119, 120si, 133, and the 143. I used to own a 166 back in the day, and new someone with a 143, but never got to use it. Any input would be great. Thanks

Of those sizes the only one I have any experience with is the 120si. The only complaint I might have is that it is a tad heavy,[ for me anyway] other than that it's a great saw. Easy to work on, good power and about trouble free, also have a 115i that has been the best saw I ever owned. I just put my 120si on ebay because I no longer use wood heat and and won't be blocking up any more wood but I know I'll miss it!

Steevo, is there any specific you want to know about each of those models? I have been with Dolmar for 19 years now and familiar with each model you refer to.

We sold lots of the older sachs saws very good saws. I recently aquired some new in the box sachs dolmars. About the only draw back to the older saws is some of the parts are hard to get. Of course that is true with all brands!

I am looking at the old 119, and the 143. I used to own a 120si, a 116, and the 115. All were good saws as far as I was concerned. I was just looking for other people's opinion on them. I hear some parts are really hard to get on these saws.

I dont know of anything discontinued for the 143 but the 119 cylinder and piston assemby is gone, however pistions are still available. The metal tank for the 119 is gone also, most everything else is still available off the top of my head.

That's better than I thought. I had heard that a lot of parts for these saws were not available. I was wondering about air filters, pistons, rings, oil pumps, things like that. All the parts that need replacing time to time. One other question, I checked on the collectors corner. These saws are rated for really high horsepower there. I also seem to remember Sachs listing the hp as very high. I am guessing that the numbers weren't exactly as they wrote them.

I think there are a few air filters still floating around for the 119. No problem there on the 143 still available. Oil pumps, pistons and piston rings still available.
In days past all manufacturers used HP for rating, now the measurement is kW or Brake Horsepower, both are more accurate terms for measurement. The old HP ratings may have fudged up back in the day before truth in advertising.

Thats what I thought. Some of the ratings for those saws are running upward to 10hp. I thought that was way too high.

Yea the 166 showed up as 12 HP. By the way Steevo, i sent you an email by mistake. Clicked on the wrong box. Sorry

Thats o.k. I tried to open it, not noticing what it was. Figured it was an ooops. Do you have any idea where I can get any real numbers as far as hp for these saws, not the inflated ones?

I might be able to dig up the old kW ratings on them. Let me take a look and I will PM them to you.

I have a 119 that I bought new in 1981. It's had moderate use over the years and still runs great. As I mentioned in another thread, I lent it to my brother who put straight gas in it and seized it. This was back in the early '90's and I was able to get a new cylinder /piston assembly no problem. New top ends are almost impossible to find these days. The saw cuts great in warm or cold weather, has an adjustable carb and overall is really easy to work on.

I have one problem with my saw: after filling it with fuel and then setting it upright, an ounce or so of fuel pours out of the bottom of the housing. I think I must have a vent hose off or something like that. I need to check it out.

Yea the vent system on the 119 used a plasitc vent and piece of fuel line that went over a threaded portion. This is what worked as the vent. Problem was the fuel line back then would rot. It sounds like it needs to be replaced. See attachment for description of part. I blew it up a litte but the picture is distorted.

That is good to know as I still get the occassional call for 166 parts. Do you have any cylinders and pistons?

I'm also interested. I'd love to freshen-up my 166 with a new piston and rings. I also noticed the output of the 166 at 12 SAE HP. What would be a more realistic number? Eric O.
