Does it count if I started this late last Winter and put it aside all Summer? Anyway, this saw is an "assembled" McCulloch 380A, vintage 1963-64. I say assembled, because it didn't leave the factory as that model, but from all the pieces used in it, the result is closest to a 380A. It could also be labeled as an "AS special", because most all of it came from different AS members. I got the original saw and a few additional parts in a trade with another member here. What I had thought I was getting was a 550, but upon receipt it turned out to be a 380 (still fine). I think it may have been a 380 shortblock (the block is stamped both 380 and 440 on the bottom flange) with some 550 parts thrown on, like the air filter cover and full wrap handle it had when I received it. I bought another McCulloch carb from an AS member for the saw (which I never used in the end), and then I purchased a complete parts 250 from another member through E-bay (just for the Tillotson carb and linkage). The bucking spike came from another member here, who wanted nothing more than the shipping cost in return. And then there's the 32" bar that I paid another member here for, but he didn't ship to me (he's now banned). So I had this 18" bar in the shop and mounted that for now. In the process of repairing this saw, I replaced the fuel tank due to heavy corrosion, and the replacement tank was already set-up with automatic oiler built in, so the saw got upgraded to a 380A!
Here are some intersting points I found about the 380/380A in the 1965 McCulloch shop manual supplement.
~The 380 was produced in 1963 and '64 and replaced the model 1-53.
~The 380 came with a tapered crankshaft on the clutch side.(Although this saw doesn't have that, so again I know its not original)
~The 380A was also produced in 1963-64, but was not distributed in the U.S. So maybe it was sold in Canada only, or other export markets?
~The 380/380A was replaced by the model 300 in 1965.
To all of you fellow AS members that helped out with parts & etc, I say thank you. Now if I could only find that Super 550 I've been looking for...
