I literally am the only company in town that uses ppe. How bout you guys? What about the day to day scrapes? Isn't that alone reason enough to wear it?

Good for you! You may be able to buy your competitor's equipment cheap from their estates!

Seriously, you need to take care of yourself, regardless of what the 'other guys' are doing. Maybe you can also use it to present a professional appearance. Recently, I saw a crew working where the climber had a nice helmet, and harness, etc., but the groundies had nothing. Really affected my opinion of the company.

In The Cities, tree companies have to be licensed and insured if they are cutting anything over 2 inches in diameter. In Saint Paul, they have to have at least one Certified Arborist on staff. So that probably thins out some of the herd. Although, I am sure that I have seen Larry, his brother Darrell, and his other brother Darrell working around here occassionally.

He was probably a contract climber and not with that company.

I wear a helmet with ear muffs and drop down lens but rarely use the lens but if it's hot and we are just doing clean up I ditch the helmet.

I have 2 helmets. One with ear muffs and a mesh face guard and one with just ear muffs. I wear safety glasses with the one with just the ear muffs. Saturday i pulled my lanyard around a limb and the carabiner flopped over and hit me in the mouth. Hard! It almost put my teeth through my lips. I am ordering a shield for it.

Ouch! Done this with my carabiner tossing through crotches a handful of times and it hurts.

OSHA will be making mouth guards mandatory soon.

I try to wear PPE. Certain things I'm religious about such as a fall arrest harness and lanyard while I'm in a bucket. I wear chaps while running a big saw. In the summer I don't usually use them while I'm running a small saw just due to how hot they are. Here in Alabama it's 95+ and lots of humidity. My guys and I are very good about wearing helmets when we're climbing. I have muffs on mine which is a good incentive for me to remember to wear it. We wear hard hats when there's anything overhead related going on including felling. I've had several small limbs land on my head that would have really hurt if I didn't have my mine on. That's enough for me to want to wear it. I do shed them when we are chipping/dragging brush/hauling logs.

I was hit in the nipple with a backfired chip this summer and it was insane how bad it hurt. Theres no question i would have lost teeth or an eye or even an ear. Not to mention how loud tree work is. I cant imagine not wearing eye and hearing at all times. I'm not going to preach ppe because i feel the need to. I sincerely cant imagine doing this job without it.

I spent some time in the twin cities last year. Some dangerous work out there for sure! With the wind snow and rain always making mid winter job sites extremely dangerous I would not trust a crew that wasnt ready for the danger.

You know it's high quality work when "Gutting" is his first on the list of services provided
