Just curious as to some opionions on newly p[anted trees. We planted something all the lines of 21, 12" caliper zelklovas for a very high profile university. Know the balls had to be shaved down farther then the 1":10" ratio in order for them to get on a tractor trailer. These trees were planted I think two, but maybe 3 years ago. I went in to deadwood them yesterday. Obviosuly there is going to be a lot of dieback on a tree of that size that has been transplanted. So my question is, on branches that had almost no live growth, but just suckers near the branch union, would your remove the entire branch, green and all, or just back to the first decent size sucker. There is no way to abide by the 1/3 rule in this case, but IMO other circumstances apply. I did a combination of both, on huge woody peices with a few suckers I took out the whole peice. On smaller branches or some with relatively larger suckers I made essentially stubs with suckers behind them. These trees are struggling, I mean they are overcoming, they look far better then last year; but its slow battle and high profile colleges who spend that much dont want to hear it...I am just curious on what everyone opinions on care etc is as well as my prunign question...Oh and before treeseer says anything...they all have mulch rings to the dripline and irrigation...
