A nearby shop wants to give me a new chain. They likely only handle Oregon chain. I am currently running a 72LP but I may want to get a semi-chisel as sometimes I cut some dirty wood. Often I might hit a small stone or a tooth but I don't think that factors in.
What is an M72? A round cornered full-chisel? How does it compare with semi-chisel?
In a semi-chisel chain what would you suggest...72DG, 72DP?
I may end up just getting another 72LP.
Once again they likely only handle Oregon Chains...no Stihl or Carlton chain.

Oregon LP is a fine chain, with a low-vibe chassis, and excellent for bore-cutting, because of the "narrow" rakers (don't mind the small ramps in front of them).

I believe the DP is the semi-chisel version of it, but I prefere the Stihl RM for semi-chisel, even though it doesn't have the low-vibe chassis, for stay-sharp and durability in dirty wood, even though it lacks the low-vibe chassis.

My favourite chain for clean wood is the Stihl RSC, which have a low-vibe chassis (copied from Oregon), and harder cutters than the LP - but the difference in stay-sharp is marginal in clean wood.

I have tried some Oregon LGX lately, but prefere the RSC and LP, as the LG chains has no low-vibe chassis (it surely is notisable), and they all cut about the same.

Hey Troll...you don't happen to be a spokesman for Thall are ya? heh heh
As I've stated, the shop where I will get this free chain doesn't deal in Stihl products. STIHL STIHL STIHL That's all I hear on this site is STIHL. I started this thread because Thall hijacked my other thread dealing with this subject: http://www.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=51032&page=2. I don't care about no 361(send me a sample)...I was just seeking advice on an Oregon chain. I do have a Stihl 33RS chain that I have yet to try. I have confidence that it will perform well but as I need to pick up my free chain soon I was wondering about the Oregon M72 and the semi-chisel chain that Oregon offers. Maybe a semi-chisel chain is not in my future.

Okay, I just got off the phone with the Oregon lady and basically the Oregon M72 is a chisel chain with extra chrome (Specially built chain with bumper driver links and extra-heavy-duty chrome on the round-ground chisel cutters for effective cutting in extremely dirty or abrasive conditions). The Oregon semi-chisel 72DG is an obsolete chain part number. I don't know if the chain is still available under a different number or not. So the semi-chisel chain that I may want to go with is the 72DP (Semi-chisel cutters with bumper drive links and standard sequence).

DP should serve you well, Oregons bumper drive links doesn't hamper cutting, but bumper tie-straps surely does, as does Stihls bumper drive links (too large).......

I am not biased twds Stihl (look at my sig) - just stating the facts, as far as I know them.:hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

Ask the shop if they have any DG hanging around, might have some dust on it but is a good chain for dirty wood.

hmm...they might. DG better than DP? If so, why?
What I really need is one of those Stihl fire & rescue chains like I saw on Modern Marvels.
